Difference is that it’s a “He” in their sacred text.
They don’t care about your pronouns, only you do, that’s the difference.
Why would God be limited by gender? This is such a weird belief to have. Doesn’t need a physical form, isn’t limited by space or time, but is always male…somehow.
Also, a lot of these same people believe that your genitalia determines what your gender is. Which means that they believe that God has a cock and balls. How can you have a cock and balls when you don’t have a body?
You have to ask them…
It was also translated from ancient Hebrew and Greek, not sure how exactly those languages handle gendered and gender neutral pronouns.
Pretty sure they were gendered to hell and back.
Came across interesting idea mentioning that in original Hebrew, when we call God is “one” (Deuteronomy 6:4, the Jewish Shema) they use the word “echad” meaning something more complicated than one singular thing, so like the unity of multiple. Other times that word is used is when God created first day and first night, combining them into “one” day-cycle. And also when describing man and woman becoming “one” in marriage.
So it’s not so far fetched for some to argue that God is both male and female, similar to Taoism’s idea of yin-yang. I personally think they’re describing the same concept from different angles. But those Christians believing in the trinity might beg to differ.
I’m not Christian, but I do find studying world religions very fascinating.
Only because “he” can be gender neutral in English. Singular “they” is old but has never really been popular. The original languages don’t have gendered pronouns.
Singular “they” is old but has never really been popular.
What are you talking about? People use singular “they” all the time.
Not nearly everybody, and it’s more popular now than ever.
Greek and Hebrew definitely do have gendered pronouns. Though Hebrew generally prefers suffixes, they’re certainly gendered. Interestingly Greek also has a neuter gender in both pronouns and nouns. A better argument might be that God’s gender is self-defined, rather than on a biological basis.
Sanskrit has gendered pronouns. Indo-european languages generally have gendered pronouns. Non-gendered languages are like Turkish, Finnish/Finno-Ugric, but all of those very much have many words for male, female, and it/that. Gender is a big thing for biology, humanity has always and will always have words for all of that.
GOD IS genderless though, but evangelicals think its a MAN. several movies had made it a woman, to troll how stupid these people are.
they got upset about how angels are not masculinized, like god they are technically genderless, only not within a host.
Thanks for the reminder to rewatch Dogma
Every god is made up and can be whatever gender you want it to be, hun
Yeah no shit, God is imaginary, congratulations you get it. Stop treating every believer you meet like they’re fresh out of Sunday school and literally think of God as a literal magic sky fairy.
Ask them how big God’s dick is. Tell them you’re serious. Make then explain how that’s a ridiculous question. Then ask them: if God’s gender identity isn’t tied to genitals, why do they insist on doing it?
Could God microwave
a burritohis penis so hot that not even he couldn’t eat it?Edit: her penis.
Could God’s dick be so big, that he himself could not lift it? Then he is not all powerful.
Mmm-hmm, oh yeah, me too. (Umm… what song?)
Idk the cool way to share music on Lemmy
“Myyy COCK is much BIGGER THEN YOUUUUURS!”
Let me discuss dick sizes with Gramma, I’ll brb!
But they never said they don’t care about pronouns. In fact they have very strongly stated that they extremely do care about pronouns
I think the point is they don’t respect pronouns. They misgender trans people, so misgender their god. Or misgender them! See how they like it.
True, the one I always think was strange was when I was 6? I had a 1st grade teacher that was adamant we addressed her and others by the correct form of Ms/Miss/Mrs.
I was 6, I shouldn’t have to care at all which adults are romantically involved nor which government documents theyve signed.
Twitter: set up strawman; knock it down. Gain followers. Rinse, repeat.
Their insecurities not only live rent free in their head, they’ve turned the whole place into a slum for stupid ideas
FR I thought the meme was maybe some sort of anti-christian-trans meme like some sort of church for trans out there would hypothetically get peeved about God’s pronouns specifically?
Pure fever dream nonsense.
I think prefixing Christian god is better. Every time “well thank Christian god you’re alright”, just subtly remind them there’s other religions, they don’t like that
After looking at Hinduism, I thought “Yeah, having only one god is pretty boring”. I’m sure that’s why the Catholic church came up with the concept of saints. They’re like demi-gods.
I’m not under your god’s jurisdiction.

I used to do exactly this when referring to the generic all-being (as opposed to the Abrahamic god who has a history and a feminine consort), since biological sex is specific to individual species. Also, the X-gamete is the default. The Y-gamete is a weird shortened appendix.
Technically, they/them would be more appropriate in this gender-conscious era. It works better for the holy trinity as well, but that’s a post-biblical addition to the Christian dogma.
I’ve seen God, and she was black.
I take issue with the depiction of God as black or she. When I saw God they had no skin color, because they were not in a form that would ever require skin and they were all genders and none at the same time. Might have been the psychadelics, but I like that interpretation.

Buffalo wins a Superbowl in this timeline… 😢
I’ve seen God, and I swear on my life he was a black man driving a Cadillac.
AMEN. 😤😤😤
She looks and sounds just like Whoopi Goldberg.
Are we sure it just wasn’t gender-swapped Morgan Freeman?
Look I think religion is stupid but so is this strawman feelgoodsy argument. So disappointing.
It’s not an argument? How did you get an argument out of this?
It’s implying that there’s some sort of hypocrisy or logical contradiction with Christians suddenly caring about pronouns being correct when it applies to God. But that entire premise is wrong, because as someone else eloquently stated, they never claimed not to care about pronouns, in fact they care about them probably more than most transgender people. They just care about them being their version of “right”. The post is very clearly meant to be some sort of gotcha or serve to Christianity. But there is no gotcha, so the whole post is stupid. Really picture the exchange:
A: “I love God, I’m so thankful for how she’s blessed me.”
C: “She? God is a man. He blessed you.”
A: “Ohhh, so now you care about getting pronouns right, but not for someone like Elliot Page, huh?”
C: “No, I always care about getting pronouns right. That’s why God is a He and Page is a she, and it pisses me off if you say either of those differently”
???
So with that in mind, we can see this post is just someone owning an imaginary strawman.
Well, it’s really about misgendering. They’re misgendering God, just like they’re misgendering Elliot Page. Elliot Page wants to be called he/him and they want God to be called he/him.
But to the Christians, misgendering is defined as calling someone by the pronouns they “actually aren’t”, so they would consider he/him pronouns to be misgendering Page. Their notion of misgendering has nothing to do with what the person wants to be called, it has to do with what they fundamentally are. So from that point of view, there’s no contradiction in their reasoning. It’s internally consistent, and so there’s no “revelation” (ha ha) where they’re trapped into looking like a fool as this imaginary Twitter post scenario implies. So this whole hypothetical demonstration of calling God a girl still goes nowhere. Go back to my initial dialogue. See how there’s no next response for the atheist, how it ends with the atheist having nothing to say? That’s why the Le Epic Win in the original post is not what it’s presented to be. Its a bad argument. The argument is implicit, but it’s there. It’s the entire content of the post.
Yeah, they’re more of a he/Him/it anyway
They/them would be more accurate since the god from the Bible is a mixture of different bronze age gods. Did you notice how God is something shown as bloodthirsty and sometimes as benevolent? That is because they took myths and stories from different gods.
The true god cares not what your fleshy bits or squishy bits say is your pronouns. The true god only cares how many dreadnought rated artillery cannons are plugged directly into your brainstem.
I serve the Omnissiah.
The flesh is weak, but steel endures.
This reminds me I was stopped in the street a few years ago by someone explaining some newer Korean Christian based religio/sect which believes that there are two images of God, the father and the mother, as humans were created in God’s image. I think it is this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Mission_Society_Church_of_God
Super interesting. There was another newer Korean christian movement that discusses the feminine side of God. Do you think that maybe Taoism and the concept of yin-yang had an impact on their image of God?
To be honest my first thought was that they were riding the feminism wave to market their religion. But I have not researched it much.
God says right in the bible that they are enby.

The character of god is basically the ultimate shape shifter. For a being capable of shaping reality with just a thought, I gotta think such a being would be in a pretty constant phase of modifying itself, not just it’s reality.
“He” vs “she” doesn’t even scratch the tip of the iceberg when you look at god’s arsenal of gender and sex characteristics - just look at some of the crazy shit it put here on earth. And I mean all of it, from the familiar dangly bits in our own pants to like a lizard’s cloaca, to pollinators, etc.
You know the whole “biblically accurate angel” spiel with the trippy shifting eyes? I gotta think god’s junk is a similar kaleidoscopic amalgamation of scrotums, clitorises, corkscrew duck penises, pollen, etc; all covered with a hefty amount of pubic hair and buckets of mucous.
Amen.
I am curious, historically was God referred to by he, she, or it?
Afaik the English version of the lore has always been ‘he’. The original story according to the original language though, idk.
…I’d guess the original also used masculine pronouns though, mostly because of the whole triune thing - their ‘god’ is actually three critters rolled into one. There’s the ‘father’ or what most people mean by the word ‘god’, the ‘son’ or ‘Jesus’, and ‘the holy spirit’ which is basically The Force from Star Wars.
I don’t recall a sex or gender ever being assigned to The Force, but even if it is canonically female, the sausage fest from the other two would still tip the scales into ‘he/him’ territory.
They/them is probably the most accurate even of the lore itself doesn’t use it - between the three, god is gender fluid. Volatilely so if we’re going with the kaleidoscopic dance in the pants that is my preferred head canon (there’s nothing in that book that suggests this isn’t the case, and believing based on the lack of disproof is the whole basis for their cult in the first place, so I’m rolling with it!).
My Allah* bless for taking the time to answer me.
Edit: Or God, whatever rocks your boat
Same character, different fiction.
familiar dangly bits in our own pants
Speak for yourself, there’s nothing familiar about whatever is going on down there.
I think you might actually be god.
I’ve been trying to tell people that for ages.
The created God is indeed the ultimate shapeshifter. They can be whatever those who imagine them imagine then as.
Amen brother.
