I always struggle to imagine how graphics and music of these games must’ve been top notch back then. My first videogame was over two decades after Final Fantasy VI released, and technical advances over the last decade haven’t been that crazy.
It was pretty amazing all around. The story was also unlike anything else at the time.
That game has one of the best bait and switch moments in history.

You’ve explored the whole world map. The story seems pretty wrapped up. You fly up to a floating continent with awesome music that just screams final dungeon. You finally confront the main villain and… You’re halfway through the game.
Not to mention how it opens up and the story becomes non-linear shortly thereafter. It’s such a masterful pivot.
Yeah that too. Honestly that game was just so ahead of its time.
