Political Memes@lemmy.world•There's something to be said for the direct approachEnglish
4·8 hours agoNo, in this case business describes how the union functions. A business union like the NEA is prone to union busting their staff. With a business union, you go to a steward with an issue and they say that they’ll take care of it.
A class struggle union is typically lean on staff and the local is handled by volunteer members. Stewards work with the member when there’s a problem to try and find a solution collaboratively. It fuels the “injury to one, injury to all” mentality.
Trade union just defines a union within an industry. WGA is a trade union for the entertainment industry, IBEW is a trade union for electrical workers, NALC is the trade union for the post office, Teamsters is the trade union for truck drivers, etc.

The labor movement is old, and old movements are extremely complex. Business unions took hold during the second red scare and have dominated for decades. They act like a service to workers and don’t recognize the class war.
Class Struggle unions are still extremely militant. You want to know why SpaceX and Trader Joe’s are trying to ban the nlrb? Because Class Struggle Unionism is taking over again.

19·1 day agoand like idiots, we’re going to play right into it.
As a queer person in Minneapolis, my only option is to stand up and confront these fascists. Acting may lead to my death, but not acting guarantees lifelong oppression. Not just for me, but my friends, family, and neighbors.
If protesting leads to increased violence and oppression against us, the answer is not to shrink and hide, but to resist harder. I will not be surprised when a person or people kill ICE agents at a raid.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Managers and bosses who have been told by employees that you are a good leader, what do you different?English
3·2 days agoStart by getting a list of all your coworkers. Work through the list to identify people who you think would be open to the idea.
Begin agitating around some bullshit the company pulled, and have one-on-one conversations to try and recruit influential people to your organizing committee. Your OC should meet regularly, like twice a month or once a week, to discuss issues, challenges, who you talked to, and more.
As your union grows, it’s time to start taking action. Publicly agitate at work by marching on the boss, disrupting the floor, writing petitions to management, or any other action to confront the boss and engage your coworkers. Don’t forget to keep having conversations either! Actions build strong support, but you don’t win if your OC isn’t connecting with people individually.
Once you have at least 65% coworkers supporting you, then its time to get recognition by the government to earn your right of collective bargaining. Details about this vary by region, but in the US this typically involves everyone signing a Union Authorization Card. This part of the campaign is where you’re most likely to get the anti-union campaign from the boss, so be prepared to shut it down. If you haven’t already, now’s the time to consider connecting with a larger union to amplify your voice as a worker in national politics.
Time to bargain! Elect a bargaining committee, write a vision statement, select union stewards, build a mobilizing committee, and fight for better conditions!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your justification for your own existence?English
2·3 days agoI exist because the world existed before I did. My existence is neutral, it is my actions that determine good or bad. I am capable of unparalleled compassion and kindness, but I’m also capable of unimaginable cruelty. Choosing not to care about these capabilities is why we have some truly terrible people throughout the world. Therefore it is my duty to care for myself and others around me, to reduce cruelty in the world.

11·3 days agoNo, they won’t get in trouble. There are no laws dictating the treatment of flags, except the very important freedom allowing it to be burnt as political speech. There are people who might get upset, but that’s the most of it

Every time I help a family member with tech support, I make sure to install ubo as an extra , even if it’s unrelated to the problem. I’ve also started adding the bookmarklet kill sticky. Less clutter and ads means less attack vectors, which means less work for me.
