These tariffs have been introduced under Section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act, which covers trade discrimination rather than national emergencies (the mechanism used for the previous tariffs which the Supreme Court struck down recently).
In his first term trump himself signed the USMCA ensuring tariff free trade between the three countries. Yet this is yet another violation of his own promise to our ally nations and our closest neighbors. It should be no surprise to anyone that trumps promise is worth nothing. Were I in other countries positions, I’d write internal (and public) legislation saying that agreements with the USA under trump are all in bad faith and that the home country has no obligation to uphold its own side. Then I’d sign anything trump wants to get what I need for my nation, and ignore any obligations under the agreement to the USA. Its what the USA does under trump. Educated the trump administration on “Treat others as you want to be treated”.
However, several key exports will be spared, such as energy, potash, critical minerals and fish.
Well it sounds like Canada knows where to apply the Canadian side tariffs then. 10,000% tariff on critical minerals sounds like a good start for Canada to recoup some of their tariff losses to trump’s idiocy.
Name checks out. Tarrifs are a tax on Canadians. Surcharge energy potash and critical minerals so that the outgoing goods are matched with the same price across the board exclusively to the us, no carve outs.
He has a point about the alcohol. We should put it back on shelves. At this point, no one will buy it. I’m even avoiding US soda companies.
Yes we should have export fees on potash and energy, sell them at quadruple the price to the us
That will just start bombing. Carney is blowing hundreds of billions of defence, which will all be useless.
Maybe a cap on exports to the USA. Set it just above the current amount and force them to negotiate if they want it increased.
I’m so tired of trump treating our Canadian brothers and sisters badly like this.
sorry funny he is shitting over his own hallmark deal from his first term. The current president sure does think the person holding the office two terms ago was a massive moron.
I mean, he’s not wrong.
Canada should throw out all of their US written IP laws in retaliation.
We have the same IP laws, same patents.
Imagine buying a shit American car anyway
Especially a Tesla.
Teslas are made with CDN parts.
Hope to see him kirked one day.
