      Survivorship bias.

Right wing tech folks abuse their workers and customers, which brings in money to grow the company. Which makes their companies enormous.

If you treat customers and workers fairly, you’ll earn much less money, slowing down the growth of your company. Which ends up eliminating you via competition.

Companies can only be ethical if governments force them to be so. Otherwise their future is doomed.

I used to follow 37signals and they were very much not a typical tech company at the time.

They never did fremium data collector bullshit, they just sold basecamp and their other app subscriptions. They were an early saas take that for what you will.

In those days 37signals ran as what is now called a lifestyle startup and had only a few employees spread across the country who would meet up to work together as few weeks out of the year.

This is all from memory though, and I stopped following them and switched to node or ruby + Sinatra around the mid 2010s though, so I’m not sure what has happened since, but this blog post is batshit conservative bullshit. Guess it’s time to trash my old Rails books with the Harry Potter ones.

With people like him I’d say it’s about a combination of being contrarían in general, being surrounded by yes men, and looking up to rich assholes.

More generally, we can all fall for reactionary crap if we don’t see it for what it is and if it speaks to some grievance we have. We need to be smarter and look at historical patterns, the fascists never helped any workers, they just got countless people killed, and letting them rise to power eventually leads to someone, either you or someone you care about, being next.

Less about “tech folks” and more about folks that tend to drive followers. For good or for ill, a horribly large ego can drive adherents. If someone believes in their stuff hard enough, it tends to inspire others to think there must be something to it.

I love how all these people who talk about immigration and remigration never talk about Western countries and Israel bombing middle east to oblivion. Sure buddy it is 100% sensible to ask someone to go back to a country with no infrastructure, healthcare or education left thanks to your country and its allies.

        paying billions in taxes

And how much do they cost us? When people immigrate, they are a short-term cost to the country (as all migrants are). Question is: do they make us money in the long term. For many countries, the answer is no: “The Long-Term Fiscal Impact of Immigrants in the Netherlands, Differentiated by Motive, Source Region and Generation”

How many houses do they take in (there’s a 400k houses short in the Netherlands, for example; we build 70k houses a year, but take in 100k migrants (300k in - 200k out = 100k net growth) plus another 100k babies that are born. Where is everybody supposed to live?

Then there’s the nitrous-crisis that we’re dealing with, which means we CAN’T just “build more houses”, and those that are being built can’t connect to the electricity grid, because there’s a waiting list because the VVD decided back in 2008 that investing in our grid for the future wasn’t of their concern…

Fuck mass migration, and fuck you for only seeing people as economic units. I’m fucking pissed.

I mean, you were a drain on your country’s education money, but you’re still allowed to live there, so why shouldn’t they be able to?

And arguably, the fertility rate (which is around 1.43) of the Netherlands means that there wouldn’t really be a need to continue to keep making houses. You can just wait for the population to decline! Like, factoring in the babies (who, uh, don’t typically need their own houses), you would need to take in… Well, yeah, around 100k immigrants yearly to maintain a constant population (need to have that replacement rate be around 1.05ish), so it sounds like there isn’t really a problem, but I also haven’t really factored in that you might just be a racist.

Reeducation centers ideally located in immigrant ghettos so they can correct the wrong of forcing refugees into under-served areas with no industry or legal way to improve one’s situation their politics brought about.

I’m going to them realizing that they are the problem and not everybody else. They think all the problems come from migrants. Let’s remove that variable and check if they are right. Not by removing the migrants, but by removing them from society.

They think all the problems come from migrants.

Thing is: there’s a few migrants causing most of the issues, but because the rules are so protective, we can’t get rid of these few assholes, so now people want to get rid of all migrants.

If we were able to get rid of the few asshole migrants, things would not be the issue they are today.

    Huh he actually did…

Because the sacred cow here is not just that mass migration must stop going forward. It’s also that millions who are already in Europe must go. Remigration has gone from a fringe concept to the mainstream discourse in record time on account of that realization.

I think all of the previous criticisms of him have been pretty questionable exaggerations by the far left but you can’t argue with this one. Also I didn’t know he had such idiotic views on climate change. Sure, get air conditioners. But…

Setting aside how much of global warming is due to man-made causes, the reality is that Europe is irrelevant to the equation either way. Just 6% of global emissions originate there. So even if the nirvana of net zero could be achieved, it would change nothing, yet cost the continent everything.

First, why do we need to set that question aside? It’s not a question, we know the answer. Second, what does he think is going to happen if every country in the world says “well we only contribute <10% of the problem so it won’t make any difference if we change anything”? What a tool.

Wasn’t familiar with this guy other than through trying Omarchy over one weekend, so I went down the rabbit hole.

Apparently this is something he is fairly well known for:

    (from his Wikipedia entry)

“In 2025, Hansson published a blog post expressing support for far-right British activist Tommy Robinson and the 2025 British anti-immigration protests.”

Bold strategy alienating his user base and any supporters still around, let’s see if it pays off for him.

What a dumbass. Doubling and tripling and quadrupling down and knowing literally nothing about what he’s talking about.

First of all, the US won’t beat China because they deindustrialized and China is the factory of the world. This won’t change short of a nuclear holocaust.

Second of all, most environmentalists want investment in greener energy so that we don’t destroy the world if we can avoid that. China already makes cheap renewables, and it will only get cheaper still. Europe’s energy crisis is tied to importing expensive US energy and not even trying to go renewable so they break off that dependency.

Third, as the US makes the world economy implode with a new stupid war the price of energy will only keep going up and up, so countries that heavily rely on importing energy will suffer a lot. You can’t techbro your way out of this, and this should be obvious, but no amount of ethnic cleansing can reindustrialize an economy. Not only is his whole ideology appalling for anyone with a modicum of empathy, it’s also not grounded in reality. But no, I’m sure if we all just believe in capitalism and fascism hard enough things will magically get better! Come on guys, the US is doing that and it’s TOTALLY not just a bubble!!!

He lives in a parallel universe

The best part of the American ethos is the belief that we can build our way out of anything. Behind China on chips and fabs? Let’s build. Challenged by BYD? Let’s build. Catch a glimpse of a future massively accelerated by AI? LET’S BUILD.

Build Chips and fabs = build some megaproject that won’t be used because stockholders prefer to save $0.04 per unit

Challenged by byd? Let’s sweep it under the rug with tariffs. But when in a few years their cars are actually better than Ford and GM, what to do?

Finally the ai grift with massive underutilized datacenters

It’s funny because I’ve worked with ruby on rails my entire career and can barely see how he built the tool that such an open and inclusive community formed around. He was always an outlier in that setting and even more so now. My understanding is that he’s not very involved with the project and even if he was it would be pointless to boycott it since he doesn’t gain anything from it anymore. Hey and Basecamp on the other hand, yeah, neither are seeing a penny from me.

I don’t believe in forcing people to stay in situations that are harmful to them and their families.

I don’t believe in deporting people seeking refuge from bad conditions.

I also know that no country can hope to remain ethnically or culturally “pure”, especially in the age of rapid transit and instant worldwide communication and access to information.

If you actually believe some European country can round up and deport every “undesirable” human, you’re kidding yourself or a fucking Nazi.

Get over it and learn to live with people who are different from you.
