A student pilot successfully landed a plane by herself after her instructor jumped to his death mid-flight.

She said her instructor told her “You know what to do” before leaping from the aircraft.

The article shows a picture of the instructor next to an image of a small single engine cessna.

Comment reads: You could literally land a plane by yourself after your instructor jumps to his death mid-flight and they’d still use a picture of a man.

There are no less than 5 references to her gender in the first tweet. Not disagreeing with you, but it’s difficult to miss that the pilot was a woman.

Their pronouns and placed at expected locations in the sentence. Hence I didn’t read them. I am a weird one when it comes to that. You really need to point that out explicitly if you want me to get that.

Edit: also paying attention to tbe gender of pronouns in German is somewhat pointless since words can influence the Grammatic gender anyway. There is no they them after all.

Isn’t it fortunate that the tweet was in English with a screen snapshot that was in English? Or was “LOL GERMAN” your goalpost moving?

No, but being a german I might perceive gendered pronouns differently compared to native Brits.

Oh, look! It is equally clear here that the student was a woman and the instructor was a man! It seems that you can’t really hide behind German as an excuse, can you? Or did I mistranslate this badly? (I’m a bit rusty in German.)

Here is a little bit of a tip: if your grasp of a language is weak, perhaps you shouldn’t comment on the clarity of speech of a native speaker of said language. It really isn’t a good look. It’s pretty much why I won’t correct or criticize the grammar of French or Mandarin speakers because, well, my command of these is not strong enough to be certain.

You clearly didn’t read what I wrote with enough attention to detail.

I did not argue that the bit of text didn’t have the information, but that it was encoded only in pronouns and not subject of the post. And encoding gender in pronouns does not work in German. If you had used the correct translation for student which is Student it would have been less clear. Coed (Student with female pronouns) is the word for Studentin. You wouldn’t translate Bäckerin as bakress, I sincerely hope.

May I politely ask why this has become a topic of conversation here? There’s nothing in German in the post, no one is speaking German in the comments - why would the post have to cater to the way you read pronouns in German?

It doesn’t. And I have no idea why they argue that way. I just said that I didn’t read the pronouns as being gender specific. This might be to do with my nationality and hence warped perception of language.

I just said that I didn’t read it as being gendered at first. And get attacked for it.

I have to admit I was a little confused when you first replied to me as well. Probably just a language barrier thing.

Its difficult to miss it in the tweet. Its easy to miss it in the articles. In my quick glance, none of the headlines contained any gender information. Some ran the story before identifying the student. The CNN article, the one I read in its entirity, referred to the student by name once, and did not refer to her with pronouns, but referred to the pilot he/him pronouns twice.

The media framed this story around a man’s suicide, rather than a story of a woman’s unexpected solo flight. Both would be valid ways to tell the story, but its telling the publishers all went with the man’s story version.
