It is now mandatory but lots of people still don’t have access to a collect point. Some progress have been made in 2023 but it is far from being enough for the whole population to start separating compostables.

For most people around me there is no difference in the way they handle their waste and many are not even aware of this regulation.

I’m in Southern Germany and similar rules got rolled out here last year. For me, it turned out to be quite cool.

The multi-home house, that I live in, organized shared bins, so that’s two larger bins for 16 families, which get emptied every two weeks. Which means this collection is practically free and the janitor brings out those bins on collection day, so I don’t have to think of it.

It also practically cut my non-recycled waste in half (in particular due to paper towels), which I do have to pay for and which I have to bring out and back in myself.

I hope it like become as easy for french people as it is for you. For now, despite the law being passed, we don’t much more access to composting point so we are still far away from most people starting to compost.
