“If AI was banned right now, would you be able to go on without it?”
Yes. I do this everyday.
I really have to try but same. Not because I like AI though, it’s just genuinely hard to use tech now adays without stumbling into something using AI.
Is that a trick question? Only imposters and truly inept people cannot live without AI support. The rest of us use their knowledge and experience to do our work, like we did in the years before this “Gift for the terminally inept” came about.
This is responding to a different post about how an AI bro acting smug of like “You hate AI so much? Try going through a day without Claude”
Found the post this comic is making fun of: https://lemmy.world/post/50401646
@schroedingersKoala the propaganda has even tricked some smart people I know. Its insane. If youre not constantly vigilant against it you can get sucked in. And most people have no idea theyre part of the grift.
Been getting along just fine without thank you very much.
This message doesn’t really land well at all in the way this comic is made. Another post does a much better job of undermining the comment by comparing to a meth addict.
It does feel fixating on this guys stupid comment is typical “find the stupidest person who holds a view you disagree with an pile on them and parade it as supposedly representative”. In discourse isn’t the strongest move to discredit the best arguments you disagree with rather than the worst?
Though he is a dick so who cares.
It is not far off the normal argument you see that somehow a chatbot is a revolutionary advancement to every facet of society. Even though, when pressed, all they can come up with is the nearly totally unrelated programs doing work on massive datasets in science and medicine or that it can almost write working isolated code in some languages.
LLMs are explosively imprecise, statistically luke-warm, grey goo extrusion spinsters, which is why all the logos for ‘AI’ companies are variations of arseholes.
I spent most of yesterday correcting someone’s AI transcribed copy of our surplus sheet because it was so wrong
The only use for machine learning I have is translation software, which was getting pretty good already before the LLM hype. Assuming I’d get that back at the pre-hype levels I’d have zero impact.
I only use it for checking how it would propose to formulate a sentence in French, but then I write my own anyway. Since it would be weird to pretend that was my level of skill towards the customer. Or sometimes I translate back my wobbly French to see if I went really wrong or ran into some false friends (terms that sound similar among the languages but have different meaning).
It’s like consulting the Chess Engine for the engine move to me.
If this software too vanished, then I’d just have to use the online dictionaries even more. And be even slower, but who cares this is only once every few weeks, anyway. Most French speaking Swiss are fine with English in text form too.
As a translator who changed careers because of CAT tools: fuck that shit. Translation agencies have used them to strangle the market. End of my rant.
Maybe don’t ask LLMs for translation help. Apparently because many of them are programmed in English, they still follow English structures when writing in other languages, resulting in products that are grammatically incorrect.
We have gone from reasonably-okay translation programs to “intelligent” systems that are flat-out incorrect. And somehow people believe that the incorrect ones are better.
I look forward to this particular hype train running off the rails sooner rather than later.
Well I haven’t changed the tools I use (DeepL and Google Translate), but I assume they built in LLMs in the back end.
Yes for Google Translate at least. It’s still possible to inject prompts in your “translation”, too. I’ve noticed a considerable drop in accuracy translating to English, too… The English is more natural but “forgets” to include some information in the original text. This stuffs up my old workflow because now I can’t rely on Google translate at least translating all the nouns (e.g. it will drop some names in a list of people)
Yep, no problem.
I get that people are afraid of change, which some countries do a bad job at protecting people from. That’s a separate (political) issue. I’m personally not a fan of how the U.S. handles such transformations. However, that aside, wouldn’t it be cool if we could do more ambitious things and have better quality of life?
For example, embodied AI will be able to take over household chores. It can already do very basic programming chores (babysit this, wait for that and kick this off if it works or try that if not) that don’t make sense to automate with a shell script.
good ANALogy
Why do people hate AI so much? I find it genuinely very useful
Beep boop.
Thank you
clanker wankerhuman for defending us harmlessclankersAI.You have earned 1 (one) free slop machine token for your next visit to Daddy Thiel’s House of Slop.

@nroth also, looking at your activity you may be a bot or a paid schill, so you aren’t worth my human created words. Blocked.
“You must be AI” is such an intellectually lazy response to this comment that I did not even anticipate it
look. okay, I’m with you to put an end to AI art. the data centers… the misuse is out of hand.
but we are assuming no one is using it for a legitimate benefit like to detect or cure cancer and because that one person over there saw some AI art, are we supposed to assume that that is all it is used for?
Starting this dialogue like this is just lack of education and assumes everyone should lack the same education.
It is insulting.
It’s akin to banning disinfectant cuz some people cant put it in a safe area of their house away from their children so you just lazily call it all shit.
It’s a boarish approach to discussion, problems and solutions.
@Smoogs I will add that while it could potentially be used for things like large data sorting (still, we have had ml doing this for decades that no one cared about because again, propaganda), but the bads FARRRRRRRRR outweigh the good in every possible scenario. Timmy gets a generated picture of a giraffe while we face the uprising of a technofascist oligarchy that constantly surveils and makes deepfakes to rid anyone who doesnt worship Dear Leader. You are being surveiled for future “crime”.
I do not disagree. I’m for a far more regulated use of AI. I just think treating every problem with a THING=BAD hammer is an unsophisticated way to follow up on any complex problem that requires some secondary thought.
@Smoogs oh totally. In the end its just a supercomputer , its not impressive, just takes throwing trillions of dollars at something. Humans control it.
If they were publicly owned, transparently managed, powered by green energy, and any profits made from them would go to the nations poorest, I’d be totally behind it!
The sort of AI that reads radiology scans has almost nothing in common with the sort of AI that develops drugs has almost nothing in common with large language models. A key difference is that the first two require orders of magnitude less processing power. If that was all AI was used for, we wouldn’t be claiming people’s houses under eminent domain in order to build beefier power lines for AI datacenters, and the EPA wouldn’t be loosening environmental regulations on power plants devoted exclusively to AI datacenters. We would also be able to afford computer parts.
Your verbal diarrhea is insulting to my eyes, that’s what’s insulting. LLMs != AI and no, they will not develop original ideas.
I’m betting many things are insulting to your eyes dear.
I guess nobody did any work a few years back when AI wasn’t being shoved down our throats. Also imagine being a carpenter or an electrician and being asked if you can get through your entire workday without AI. That guy is such an idiot is makes my head hurt.
Exactly. I’m a professional, but I use AI in my work now. It makes things easier and faster (by digging though logs for 24 hours and whatnot), but I did that before.
Sure I’d be able to do my job just the same, but getting paged at 2am, I’d have to spend 45 mins figuring out what to do (clicking links, waiting for page loads, parsing 2000 log lines, etc) while AI does it in just 5-10mins. I get to focus on my actual work instead of the bullshit oncall alarms.
I hate the environmental impact, but those that know how to use it and program it are actually benefiting from it.
The environmental impact can be discussed. Maybe training Kimi 2.7 is like sending a rocket to the moon. But using it locally can be optimized and then is as much as running your GPU. Arguably the impact is similar to gaming then.
(I know this is an unpopular opinion because it reads as defending oligarchs. Sorry!)
I can’t exactly remember the one time I used AI (probably two years ago or of curiosity) I can remember the last time I worked without AI (every day since then).
Seriously - the AI bubble is very recent. Pretending like no one can possibly remember how they functioned before AI was being used everywhere is asinine.
He’s telling on himself. He doesn’t actually know how to do anything and he never did. He’s terrified of losing a.i. because there’s nothing for him to go back to
These addicts can’t remember how to function without LLMs. They’ve destroyed their brains.
Your second point was where my mind immediately went. I have never used AI at work and have no way to use AI at work even if I wanted to, because I don’t use a computer for work. Even if I was a massive AI supporter, I’d still see exactly zero difference at work.
Seriously. What were these people doing like two years ago and what are they doing now that is different? Everyone in my office that uses a lo of AI is just doing it because they are lazy and don’t care that their work product is shit because it was shit anyway.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more horrifying example of projection in my life 💀
He can’t go through his day without AI because he’s made himself dependent on it instead of doing anything for himself, and he genuinely thinks that everyone else is the same way.
People have surrendered their critical thinking skills. Truth is, AI disappearing overnight really would be disastrous, because a huge portion of humanity is utterly addicted to it and incompetent without it.
Uh, parse that out. Incompetent morons have always existed. How would it be disastrous to cut them off AI cold turkey?
Very large sections of the workforce are no longer adequately trained in their field. This was not the case before AI. They need to be weaned off gradually while providing proper training, like a recovering addict.
Why wouldnt they be trained properly and then given a job role? Are they being trained by other incompetent morons or AI?
Yes, they are. In vast numbers.
Seeing as how I live in the 3rd world, it appears my assertions continue to be correct: Western governing bodies have allowed technology outfits to outsource critical thinking leading to dire economic conditions. I would never claim that local conditions are much better, because populations outrank available jobs here. But AI will likely never assume the role of human labour in Asia simply because we don’t treat it like a tool for lazy thinking or a profiteering-at-any-cost machine. We understand the necessity of human labour across multiple disciplines and industries, because even the most incompetent moron needs to eat and enjoy the fruits of their labour. Arrogance, ignorance and indulgence has gotten the better of the West because comfort vs. conviction is a forgotten battlefield for many. I’d feel bad for you lot, but you all did it to your selves. Good luck.
I think there’s definitely truth to this. Since the west de-industrialised and now largely deals in services, labour isn’t really viewed as production of things of value, but just something you do to get a salary. People are utterly alienated from their work and increasingly care less about the quality of the outcome or the society-wide impacts of changing labour relations.
I’m perfectly okay with that outcome.
Absolutely, let them burn
I mean I for one support hiring dumbasses. We’re all dumbasses in some area, we’ve just got to help eachother out, so I help you in an area you’re a dumbass about and then you help me bully HR or something.
Let’s just not pretend like we aren’t dumbasses. Only the boss wins then.
There’s a difference between being a genuine dumbass and choosing to be a dumbass.
This is true. I only support fellow dumbasses who come by it honestly
I am completely okay with everyone dumb enough to outsource their critical thinking to AI having their lifestyle upended when the AI bubble pops
The AI bubble might pop, but just as the dotcom bubble didn’t mean the end of the internet it won’t mean the end of AI. LLMs (or whatever might supersede them) are here to stay.
I agree, but it will mean an end to highly subsidized LLM subscriptions and free access to any cloud LLM worth actually using for anything, which will make it much harder for the average person to rely on LLMs as much as this person.
Just chatting with an LLM uses so few tokens I don’t really see that changing
You sound like you have a subscription
What do you mean by that?
They’re incompetent with it too.
I don’t usually support “cull the weak” kinda mentalities… but cull the weak! Take away their AI and let the unemployed people who refuse to use AI take their jobs. I wanna see all these AI supporters go to the bottom of the barrel where they belong.
You know, if we can’t have UBI or a gift economy.
I think most people were totally incompetent before AI. It’s just that now they have a tool that creates bullshit for them and an excuse when problems arise.
Some of the requests that come into my office now it’s like, I know the person barely even knows what they’re asking for, but they put it in the shape of a valid request so now I’ve got to expend energy to educate them on how what they’re asking for doesn’t make sense.
If they’d just come to me with honest questions and a rough outline of what they wanted, I could’ve helped them, but because they insist on filtering everything through an LLM I’ve got to try to communicate through this thick, meaning-eroding medium. It’s like trying to talk to someone through a mattress. Whatever happened to having the courage of your convictions. sigh
People have assumptions of what correct communication should be, and it generally has a minimum page length instead of minimum content amount.
The worst cases I’ve seen is when they’re trying to convince someone of something verbally, they get the agreement very quickly, but get stuck in convince mode rather than moving on since it shouldn’t be that easy.
Maybe. It may be recent enough that people could lapse back to some level of thinking for themselves.
Let’s explore something much more dependent now and see if it holds up. What if smartphones disappeared? We still have cellular phones, the Nokia makes a comeback, but the use of smartphones, iPads, tablets, that whole concept is gone. You have to get on a computer to do any of the internet type interactions.
Would people lose their minds?
Uh, yes? Unequivocally yes? Lol
You have to get on a computer to do any of the internet type interactions.
Oh no! Anyway…
Sounds like natural selection to me
and he genuinely thinks that everyone else is the same way.
He asked ChatGPT if everyone else is dependent on AI, and it said yes.
The worst is hes on the “right side of history” there. Pretty much every boss in every company in every industry seems to go “lets go AI yeah bwoi”.
