I just want to point out that it comes more from conservative inertia and their unwillingness to recognize that they need to change the system than from hardcore religious beliefs. I suspect they will resist less once enough people accept it.
If the majority of the population starts saying, you know, this is an oversight in our perfect administration that you would need to fix, I doubt they would resist “because Jesus”.
Yeah, I agree with that. Very few japanese are religious in the sense that many western countries understand the concept; it’s unlikely to be a big force as you rightly point out. There are other factors, but nothing supernatural (though the far right venerating the emperor is a whole other can of worms)
