Something I wasn’t expecting when I moved to this Midwest city was the thriving skunk population. I only run in to them once in a while in person, but the warm weather nights are often filled with their scent.

While I’m quite sure I’d be absolutely miserable if sprayed in person, I’ve oddly come to enjoy their far-milder scent wafting in the air. There’s something unique and almost compelling about it, a bit like my occasional enjoyment sniffing gasoline at the pumps. Inexplicable, and yet there it is.

I expected skunks to take a much bigger part in my life when I moved out of the big city and in the country. In San Diego, skunks were in everyday odor if you drove at least 20 miles in any direction. Here in Lesser Carolina they’re practically nonexistent. I smell them maybe once a year And see one even less frequently.

There is something about that musk scent. They put it in colognes for some reason.
