That’s what happens when people don’t get an education.

September, October, November and December get their names precisely because they were the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th month of the Roman calendar.

    • 1 Martius Named after Mars, the god of war
    • 2 Aprilis Possibly derived from “aperire” (to open) or “Aphrilis” (from Aphrodite, the Greek equivalent of Venus)
    • 3 Maius Named after Maia, a goddess of growth
    • 4 Junius Named after Juno, the queen of the gods and goddess of marriage
    • 5 Quintilis From the Latin word “Quinque,” meaning five
    • 6 Sextilis From the Latin word “sex,” meaning six
    • 7 September From the Latin word “septem,” meaning seven
    • 8 October From the Latin word “octo,” meaning eight
    • 9 November From the Latin word “novem,” meaning nine
    • 10 December From the Latin word “decem,” meaning ten

The guy who messed it up by adding two more months to, you know, match the solar year, was King Pompilius who died peacefully in his bed.

Adding two more months (Januarius and Februarius) wasn’t the problem and they probably always have existed, but starting the year with January instead of March was. This decision was made in 601 AUC (153 BCE) much later than the legendary king.

Hmm thanks for the lesson, I never really paid much attention to calendar reform in ancient Rome. Interesting to see how much random fake history is memed around.

Mars was also the god of agriculture, which was the main reason the first month was named after him, as that was when the sowing of fields started as well as war campaigns usually starting around that time of year as well.

I forget, but was Intercalaris not a month in the Roman calendar too? If I remember correctly, they had a leap month that they would implement some years to realign the calendar, but I forget if that was Intercalaris or the one that starts with an M. I always forget what it’s called.

Prior to that the winter just wasn’t counted as an official period where things could happen, I guess.

Although everything recorded from the monarchy era should be taken with a grain of salt.

Do you think that when we have full age verification in place and children are banned from social media people will stop censuring the word “fuck” in memes? Because if yes I will start supporting it.

It’s not for “the kids”. It’s for the advertisers. So in short, no.

How does that work exactly? The advertiser tells platform not to display heir ads next to content with “fuck” in it because they are scared someone will screenshot it and accuse them of promoting indecency or something? I get it that for example a gun manufacturer would want to avoid displaying their ads next to content about suicide but who would be bothered by content with “fuck” in it? Other than maybe some kid brands.

Pretty much but less direct. It’s generally all grouped together by advertisers as ‘problematic content’. It’s quite rare for platforms to get very direct feedback so they cast a very wide net.

Aye, wait till you hear that February was the original last month of thr year and that February comes from the Latin word februum which means purification. In ancient times, it was tradition for two young men to slaughter a verile goat and make whips out of their skin, go to the temple and have milk and blood smeared on their face. Then they were supposed to laugh really loud and then run through the city, whipping everything they came across to cleanse it and make it fertile. Animals, seeds getting ready for sowing and people. Especially pregnant women, to make sure their pregnancies would go well and keep them and their children healthy and strong.

This tradition later took different forms, died out and came back again in New forms. There are still traditions in Europe today, where people are supposed to whip each other with small bundles of sticks for luck and prosperity.

I am, btw, a massive fan of the idea that March should be the first month of the year. It makes so much more sense, but honestly, the more you look into the history of the calendar and how it came to be what it is today the more chaotic and fucky it gets.

Believe it or not, the calendar we have today is the least fucky version even if there’s leap year and months have names that doesn’t always make any sense and some months have 30 days and other 31 etc. Trust me. It used to be a hell of a lot more confusing and messy.
