It’s all a distraction while they seize the treasury. This is a coup
Trump is like Vinny in My Cousin Vinny when he thinks he sweet talked the prosecutor into turning over his files.
Trudeau couldn’t talk to him until then and it wasn’t because of a lack of trying.
All of this was theatrics to give Trump an appearance of strength.
See you in 30 days for more of that same bullshit.
This will be the norm with your dumb US Cheeto leader in Mountain Dew - just never ending posturing, threats, theatrics and general stupidity. Flashing cards and flowers in one hand while swiping your wallet with the other.
The even dumber part will the political experts and academics in charge now who will write best selling books in 20-30 years time criticizing everything that is happening now and in the near future and talking about how all this could have been prevented.
Is having a fentanyl czar similar to having a crack smoking mayor or
Doug Ford goin Federal?
Similar, but more sedate.
I came to see the spin on how we caved, which I’m sure we did somehow, but:
Trudeau in his tweet said, “I just had a good call with President Trump,” and suggested that the pause on tariffs was in response to Canada’s agreement to target the flow of the deadly opioid fentanyl across the border into the United States.
As I’ve already said too much today, 2023 numbers are apparently 43 pounds. Should be easy enough to target.
Trump’s pause on tariffs on Mexican imports likewise came after Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said she would immediately send 10,000 soldiers to the U.S. border to prevent drug trafficking, fentanyl in particular, from Mexico.
I think we should do that for other reasons so thanks.Edit: misunderstood by me and no longer in the same context in the article. But also we already live at the border, and we should send some, and we can repurpose them to help defend Greenland or Panama.
Trudeau said Canada had made new commitments “to appoint a Fentanyl Czar,” among other measures.
Already have one as part of ministerial stuff, but if he can’t understand that, a simple name change when speaking should do.
Edit: article updated since I copied all that (together). It’s fairly different now and shittier.
which I’m sure we did somehow
Trudeau sold him measures that Canada had already voted on. See this post from the end of last year. https://www.canada.ca/en/public-safety-canada/news/2024/12/the-government-of-canadas-border-plan-significant-investments-to-strengthen-border-security-and-our-immigration-system.html
Trudeau “caved” by giving Trump essentially zilch, apparently assuming – perhaps not incorrectly – that Trump would be that easily swindled.
See you in 30 days for his next round of ridiculous demands. And he’ll be emboldened knowing he “won” this round.
Trudeau’s 4 years of experience working with a toddler-in-chief is showing.
Presumably his time teaching literal children also helped prepare him for dealing with that one.
I wonder if this was their scheme to tank markets, crypto and stocks, in order to buy more and have it pump again.
Good shit, turns out Trump’s misunderstanding of Tariffs works in multiple directions.
wonder if Trump is doing this just for market manipulation for family and friend’s trading
I’m really disapointed not by the halt of the tarrif war but about how trudeau already forgot any support canadian products and diversifying trade partners
It’s been a few hours. I’m confident that no one is forgetting this as a lesson in the danger of trusting the US going fares.
I’m sure that people will not forget but not so sure about our leadership
The issue is postponed not solved. Canada has every incentive to consider the issue as an ongoing crisis.
I hope that what our leadership think too
I’d rather do that through long term economic policy, and not because there’s a fire under our feet and we have no other choice.
Part of (well a lot of) me wanted to see this go through so America’s closest allies start abandoning it, but I guess that’s the only way it was going to turn out.
As an American I wanted this to go through to show that American exceptionalism is only recognized by Americans. And maybe 10% of the people who voted for him would learn to do their own research or at least look at multiple sources before buying whatever the cult leader says.
On the later at least, there are still plenty of failures to be had.
We caved, and now that orange asshole is pushing for access to our banks. Looks like this was what he wanted all along.
Motherfucker.
In a social media post after his first call with Trudeau wrapped earlier Monday, Trump chastised Canada for not allowing U.S. banks to “open or do business there.”
Until this point, Trump has framed the threatened tariffs as a way to hit back at Canada for the ongoing trade deficit and supposed inaction on drugs and migrants crossing the northern border into the U.S. — his stated concerns about banking fairness are a new development.
Personal banking in Canada is largely the domain of Canadian-based banks, due to stringent federal regulations designed to protect against bank failures. According to government figures, Canada’s large banks hold more than 93 per cent of all domestic banking assets. Canadian banks are routinely ranked among the safest in the world.

Paper Tiger
Sure, cave just like Mexico and give orange bully more confidence in blackmailing. WCGW?
Quite the opposite. We and Mexico haven’t changed anything at all and it’s Trump who looks like the clown he in fact is.
I see this less as caving to the bully and more grown-ups playing with a child. They know they can just nod their heads and play in Trump’s fentanyl fairytale land for a phone call, and that gives them a whole extra month for more trade deals that will make them less reliant on the U.S. The only one losing here is Trump, who just looks like a petulant toddler getting played like a rube, but I suspect he’s too stupid to see it that way.
This, but unfortunately the power dynamic is a little different than a usual grownup-toddler one. This toddler has a world destruction button next to his firefighter truck and could decide to play with that instead at any time something doesnt go his way.
We really didn’t cave on anything, renaming a person that already exists and allocating money towards fighting organized crime (probably from money already allocated to generic policing that was used on organized crime)
Trump can call it a win if he wants, but Trudeau (and Canada) is laughing at him.
More than laughing. I’ve seen a lot of anti American sentiment in the past few days. Some businesses preemptively and actively taking US products off the shelves, notably liquor and wine. Some Canadians are still saying they aren’t interested in US products or services after this even with the pause. Can’t let a bully take an inch. Canadians feel extremely betrayed.
Yes, rightfully so. But trump and his right-wing propaganda outlets will overtly call it a win for the president. Thus confirming his strength to all his supporters of his mastery at negotiating the deal. Meanwhile there are 38 more crisis aflame and he’s handling it all swiftly and efficiently (illegally). His fans are only too happy to have all that pesky red tape (rule of law) out of the way. Later when these (self-inflicted and grossly mishandled) issues make life far more difficult for them and everyone, they’ll eagerly (and perhaps violently) blame those damn Democrats. These people know fuck-all about politics, trade or social issues and are led around by their fear/hatred which means they are quite easy to manipulate/motivate.
Sorry.
This isn’t the end. He’s just been pushed off for another 30 days until his next round of ridiculous demands and market chaos. He didn’t win much, but neither did we. And we haven’t moved anywhere.
Nah, Mexico and Canada are just doing things they had already planned to do and telling Trump what he wants to hear. They’re just pretending the tariff announcement was part of their decision making so our idiot in chief feels like he did something. He’s such a child it hurts me to think about how millions of my fellow Americans are so goddamn stupid that they voted for him. Like, how can I not be angry with people who voted for Trump, they enabled this and it’s awful.
Anyways MX & CN are not caving at all, just illustrating how stupid our president and all of this is.
They got nothing new. I’m far from a nationalist, but even I’m ok with strengthening our border with these American sleeze balls at this point. If anything I think Trudeau played him like a fiddle - “sure Donald, we’ll give you all this “new” spending to curb fentanyl at the border” literally a non-existent issues and money that’s already been spent.
What actions, specifically, did we take that you would consider “caving”? Fentanyl trafficked across the Canadian border accounts for 0.2% of US border seizures of fentanyl and, like others have said, we already have a minister who is responsible for monitoring illicit drugs at the border so we would simply be renaming the position.
Additionally, Canadian politicians have been calling for more of a presence at the border for years, so even this would not really be much of a cave considering there’s both a federal election and an Ontario election imminent. If we do decide to have CBSA under military command, it would actually help us meet the NATO requirement to spend 2.5% GDP on our military.
No matter what we end up doing, none of it actually involves much work from us that we wouldn’t otherwise be doing anyway due to other commitments. So what are we caving on?
Pretty sure the auto companies called Trump up and said… What the FUCK are you doing?
They are the ones poised to come to a complete halt.
Also possible there could be some WTO penalties in the works, considering no one believed US’s bullshit about reneging on the free trade deal that Trump signed.
