World News@lemmy.world•Lawsuit Alleges Expedia Is to Blame for Rising Hotel PricesEnglish
12·2 days agoWorth noting that this lawsuit alleges Expedia is even causing higher prices if you book directly from the hotel. That’s exactly what you would expect to see in a monopolistic pricing scheme.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How can self-hosted software make money without hurting the ecosystem?English
2·4 days agoFor the immediate future, Europeans are personally and politically invested in digital sovereignty. The best way to get ahead quickly is to invest in open source projects. For the time being, interests seem to be aligned in favor of FOSS.
Of course, you are right. It can’t last forever.

Political Memes@lemmy.world•When losing one war, start another - Sun Tzu
112·5 days agoGot it. So a foreign militia in Lebanon is the proper government of Lebanon, a foreign militia in Yemen is the proper government of Lebanon. We see what you are doing here.

311·5 days agoSuggesting that the Houthi Iranian regional militia is “Yemen” is either astoundingly ignorant or truly unhinged.

Android@lemdro.id•What's a good app for reading epubs or pdfs of comic books?English
3·5 days agoI think its a dead project unfortunately, but maybe someone will fork it.
Seenva will detect text and frames and use smart zooming to make comics readable on smaller screens.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How can self-hosted software make money without hurting the ecosystem?English
201·5 days agoEurope is increasingly funding projects through NGOs and government foundations. If FOSS software is a public good, then we should devote public funds to it.
Some projects offer paid hosting for those who can’t or don’t wasn’t to self-host. Some (particularly mobile apps) push a paid version to stores to subsidize those using FOSS sources to download.

5·6 days agoThere are some fairly sophisticated setups with Home Assistant, voice, and either local LLM or rules-based voice, but I’ve only read about them. I don’t know if/how well they actually work.

News@lemmy.world•ABC's report on trump's corruption has been censored
27·7 days agoMod here.
We occasionally allow sources other than news articles which cannot be replicated otherwise. This appears to be the case here.
While we cannot be sure that the reason for the removal was censorship, as there are many reasons that an article may be removed. However, it has been cited by other trustworthy news sources, and censorship is a reasonable theory.
At this time, the post will remain. In the future, please DM a mod prior to posting something that is not normally permitted.

News@lemmy.world•'It Is Done. Hail Satan:' City Immediately Regrets New Religious Liberty Law That Allows Prayer at City Council Meeting [404 Media]
471·7 days agoI’m in Texas, where this kind of nonsense is standard. I’ve spoken out at multiple school boards to successfuly stop in-school prayer time. Most of the evangelical folks pushing it grumble about it without understanding that we are saving them from themselves.
The most interesting address was a devout Christian lady who had come from a district where they approved it early. She said one day her daughter came home doing sanitaria and when she complained, the school said that there was nothing they could do. She begged the schools not to make the same mistake.

CoMaps@sopuli.xyz•Why does CoMaps seem to not understand addresses?English
8·9 days agoThis should be the top reply. CoMaps is actually very good at interpreting addresses, but if the data isn’t there it isn’t there.
Some editors are beginning to label address blocks so that users can at least locate the correct street block instead of just the street. It’s a lot of volunteer hours to do it.
If users want to improve it, CoMaps makes it extremely easy to add points or leave a note for editors. That’s about the best you can ask for.

Android@lemmy.world•Is it safe to remove Google services from a phone and install microG instead?English
1·9 days agoMy comment was not specific to GrapheneOS. Although I do use it and trust them when it comes to security assessments. It’s not perfect functionality, but it should provide most of the basic functions. I would have to imagine if you’re using Shizuku that it can install it with the proper permissions. Someone mentioned checking the XDA forums, which is probably a good idea before you make any serious changes.

Phew, what a second panel!
