News@lemmy.world•A shocking 92 percent of US adults are not going to the doctor because it’s too expensive
1·2 days agoUniversal healthcare will happen in the USA once my fellow Americans figure out that paying $8K a year in premiums is more than $2K a year in taxes. So. It could take awhile.

News@lemmy.world•A shocking 92 percent of US adults are not going to the doctor because it’s too expensive
8·2 days agoI know it’s easy to shit on America and it’s the thing to do currently, but when you cherry pick the worst situations, sure it looks like shit.
Americans, per capita, pay far more for healthcare than any other country, and have a much lower life expectancy than peer countries. By any metric we are getting a shitty deal, far worse than any other country. You cannot “both sides” this one. Privatized healthcare is an abject failure that should be abandoned as quickly as possible.

This isn’t me shitting on America, this is me realistically describing what is currently going on in America.

It’s still pretty common to mail live bees (nuclear colonies).
One thing I see a lot of is photographers using instagram to advertise booking sessions, things like that. Lots of people make custom jewelry, ordered off IG and paid with paypal or venmo or something.
I don’t like it, but I do see a lot of creative folks using it to make money… while also passively supporting meta 🙄
Yep. One of my finest moments as a musician was last year. Guy comes up to me after a show and says something like “gosh, I feel bad for you musicians, AI is taking your job.” I was just like “do you think I do this for money? I have a day job. I play music to meet and impress women, and you’ll never be able to do that with AI.”

2·2 days agoHey, just asking the question is a good first step. Talk to people in your community (family, friends, workplace, the gym, wherever you spend time) about these problems. Ask them what they think. Gently suggest some solutions based on working together. If you really don’t have any solutions, say “then what are we supposed to do?” again, and brainstorm some ideas together.
I’m not who you asked but I’ve worked as a carpenter in the past; both types of doors can be soundproofed, it depends more on the surrounding doorframe/wall and weather the door itself has a solid core (quieter, but more $) or not.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
3·3 days agoI worked at a nonprofit that helped out homeless people. 500+ employees, terminals at dozens of locations, all using Ubuntu and LibreOffice for everything. It was fine. Uneventful, even. And they saved sooo much money because they never had to pay a dime to anyone besides the internal IT department. This open source stuff is imo better than the big corporate products for professional use because updates don’t break workflows as much.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•I'm right and the other vegans are wrong
1·3 days agoThey justified it as something to do with fish/shellfish not having the same kind of pain receptors and consciousness that “real” animals do and argued it was more akin to consuming fungi and bacteria. They didn’t eat dairy products or meat for more traditional vegan reasons. Since it’s this thread, i’ll say they also ate honey lol.
I don’t agree with them, and I do agree with everything you said here. I’m just saying, based on experiences in the field, when someone says to me “I’m vegan” internally I’m like “cool, so you eat whatever you want, just like everyone else” 😂
