On AstrOS the whole /usr gets hashed (thats why it isn’t possible to have it declarative, it needs to be the same for everyone). This hash gets signed. If now someone changes /usr physically from the outside the hash / hash signature mismatches and the system won’t boot. We also have a different target of users. The basic user wants a system that just works and not having to write a config file for it

As said, dm verity and the whole hashing stuff wouldn’t be possible. We also switched to fluxer with discord available as a fallback option because most people still use it

We build signed and hashed images. Why should it be NixOS based in that case. The whole point of their declarative architecture would be gone

Most other immutable cosmic distros have settled on bootc or rpm ostree with no chance of pushing them to the systemd tools in near future. So you could say that AstrOS is filling something not existing before and thus decided not to back another distro

Definitely agree with the cosmic take. It is the desktop for my distro AstrOS, anyways, this shouldn’t be self-advertisement. COSMIC delivers the beauty of tiling with ease of use. I could never use Hyprland… hmm, maybe because the dev is banned from freedesktop? This same person gets money from this whole “sponsorship” now

It is

Pubkey 11 + hash 7

I’ll look into it but can’t promise anything. Until then: https://astros-linux.org/guides/installing-in-a-vm/

Main dev yes. Thanks for the grub info

In what way, looked at obsidianOS and it seemed kinda different

Imo it generally does too much. Systemd-sysupdate being simple as hell makes it just way more solid. I think it also depends on grub and stuff

GnomeOS has plans to become a daily driver. What other two distros? KDE Linux is arch based. You confuse it with kde neon, they are not the same. For Aeon I literally said opensuse tumbleweed based. In what world is tumbleweed ubuntu based

Why can’t people differentiate the distribution model from the release model. It is quite common to have rolling atomic distros: nearly rolling built GNOME OS, arch based KDE Linux, tumbleweeds based aeon. Arch gives us close to upstream packages that aren’t heavily modified. Its a solution to have low level packages without having to build them ourselves. Our features require the newest systemd version to work. Having the latest cosmic version doesn’t cause any harm either.

dm_verity (the hash stuff) has been extremely reliable

you mean dakota right? It is an interesting project

Thanks for asking. There are plenty of bootc / rpm-ostree projects based on fedora. Systemd-sysupdate is way more low level tooling. We just want new and close to upstream packages which arch exactly provides. Arch allows us to not have to build the packages ourselves. Pacman and the aur can still be used in distrobox.

So yeah we just found arch to be the most reliable option for the systemd-tooling.
