Some hosts are threatening to strike, while others are plotting ways around Airbnb’s new restrictions. Guests, meanwhile, are celebrating.
AIRBNB HOSTS ARE melting down over a new policy banning them from making guests complete tasks that “would typically be performed by a cleaner,” like “stripping the bed, taking trash offsite, or washing and putting away dishes.”
The change, which applies to all bookings made on or after November 20, quickly sparked outrage after it was announced in an email to Airbnb hosts on Wednesday. Many began fuming online about losing the right to make their guests clean up after themselves.
“As hosts, we have a responsibility to protect our investments, our homes, and, in many cases, our personal living spaces,” one person wrote in Airbnb’s official forum for hosts. “The problem is that Airbnb increasingly expects hosts to accept the risks while limiting our ability to protect ourselves.”

I don’t understand the appeal of these stupid things. Chores while on vacation/travelling? lol
If I wanted to experience being in a home covered in bodily fluid and filled with hidden cameras then I would just… stay home for vacation.
If I wanted to be forced to be a maid while doing it then I would visit a BDSM dungeon.
As I saw it, the agreement was that I got cheaper accommodation and a full apartment or whatever as compared to just a hotel room, in exchange for doing a few chores. There are always chores on vacation unless you go on a cruise or to a resort, which isn’t how I like to travel. I go camping a lot for my vacations, and there are camp chores.
Imo, a better solution would just be requiring the airbnb listing to include the list of things you’re required to do, so you can let it advise your booking decision. If you don’t want to do the chores, book a different thing. If you’re OK with it, this is the Airbnb for you.
Shrug. I mean camping is an activity worth doing in and of itself. It’s not chores to collect fire wood and dry your socks, that’s the fun. A deviation from normality.
But doing domicile chores? In exchange for cheaper lodging? That just sounds like work.
But I stay in hotels and the only time I’m in it is when I’m dropping my stuff off or sleeping. Too much stuff to do and and see in a new place.
Yeah, definitely depends on the type of vacation you are wanting to take, and usually a hotel is the correct choice these days.
