Thought this might be some fun, so…
What are some lines from song lyrics that really hit you the right way? It could be that it’s deep and meaningful, or just something that amuses you. I’ll start:
Isn’t it funny how laughter looks like crying with no sound, and raindrops taste like tears without the pain ~ Queensryche - Another Rainy Night (Without You)
Droplets of “yes” and “no” in an ocean of “maybe” ~ Faith No More - Falling to Pieces
A smile as sweet as flowers
Wilted so and soured
Black tears stain the cheeks
That once were so admired
~ Dave Matthews Band - The Dreaming Tree
Her lovers queued up in the hallway
I heard them scratching at the door
I tried to tell her about Marx and Engels,
God and Angels…
I don’t really know what for…
But she looked good in ribbons
The Sisters Of Mercy ~ Ribbons
"My hand to God
I didn’t mean to
After all
Look what we’ve been through
Men come in different shades
That’s how we’re made
The little house on Ellis Drive
Is where I felt most alive
The oak tree covered that old Ford
I miss it Lord,
I miss it Lord
These blood red eyes
Don’t see so good
But what’s worse is if they could
Would I change my ways?
Wasted times and broken dreams
Violent colors so obscene
It’s all I see these days
These days"
Just a deep and profound expression of regret for misconduct towards another, a special person, and the feeling of tremendous loss that comes from the inevitable, irrevocable, change there from.
I know it all too well.
Burn the land and boil the sea, You can’t take the sky from me.
From Firefly. Sung by Sonny Rhodes, written by Joss Whedon
I knew it the second I read the first three words!
“I am a leaf on the wind!”
“Watch how I soar”
You know, suicide isn’t painless,
When you leave everyone in pain.
NOFX - DoornailsOoh! I like that. It reminds me of Red Reddington from the show The Blacklist voicing his take:
Have you ever seen the aftermath of a suicide bombing?
I have. June 29th, 2003. I was meeting two associates at the Marouche restaurant in Tel Aviv. As my car was pulling up, a 20-year-old Palestinian named Ghazi Safar entered the restaurant and detonated a vest wired with C-4
The shock wave knocked me flat, blew out my eardrums. I couldn’t hear. The smoke… It was like being under water. I went inside. A nightmare. Blood, parts of people. You could tell where Safar was standing when the vest blew. It was like a perfect circle of death. There was almost nothing left of the people closest to him. Seventeen dead, 46 injured. Blown to pieces. The closer they were to the bomber, the more horrific the effect
That’s every suicide. Every single one. An act of terror perpetrated against everyone who’s ever known you. Everyone who’s ever loved you. The people closest to you, the ones who cherish you are the ones who suffer the most pain, the most damage. Why would you do that? Why would you do that to people who love you?
That show is so bad, but that character is one of my all time favourites. Spader is a genius
Yeahs he commands a room for sure.
Is that a rebuttal to “suicide is painless” by, among others, Manic Street Preachers ?
You mean the theme song from M*A*S*H?
Potatoes
Strangers passing in the street. By chance, two separate glances meet, and I am you and what I see is me
~ Pink Floyd - Echoes
Oh I absolutely love this song. I was in a band back in the early 2000’s that did a cover of this. Was definitely one of my favorites.
“To defy the laws of tradition is a crusade only of the brave” Primus
Great album!!
Now Paul is a real estate novelist,
who never had time for a wife(…)
Poor, poor Paul.
Or, lucky, lucky Paul?
It’s all in the perspective. I mean, had he a wife, he may never have found himself talkin’ with Davey who was still in the navy.
The “real estate novelist” tells you he is not where he wants to be.
Actually, no one in that bar is where they want to be with the possible exception of the piano player. The old man trying to remember the good old days, the bartender who wants to be an actor, the lonely business men drowning their sorrows. It seems to me that they would all rather be somewhere or someone else.
Vicarious by TOOL
Eye on the TV, 'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be like
“Killed by the husband”
“Drowned by the ocean”
“Shot by his own son”
"She used a poison in his tea
Then kissed him goodbye"
That’s my kind of story
It’s no fun 'til someone dies
Cause I need to watch things die
From a distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too, don’t lie
Let’s put one classic here. One that is sadly more and more relevant these days…
Generals gathered in their masses, just like witches at black masses. Evil minds that plot destruction, sorcerers of death’s construction. In the fields the bodies burning, as the war machine keeps turning. Death and hatred to mankind, poisoning their brainwashed minds…Oh lord yeah!
Politicians hide themselves away They only started the war Why should they go out to fight? They leave that role to the poor
Time will tell on their power minds Making war just for fun Treating people just like pawns in chess Wait `till their judgement day comes, yeah!
Now in darkness, world stops turning, as you hear the bodies burning. No more war pigs of the power, hand of god has struck the hour. Day of judgement, god is calling, on their knees the war pigs crawling. Begging mercy for their sins, Satan, laughing, spreads his wings…Oh lord, yeah!
- War Pigs, Black Sabbath
Certain white guys will grow up listening to this and somehow end up cheering for fascists and complaining about their favorite bands “going woke”
Classic. Did a cover of that back in the day. Was more of a cover of Faith No More’s cover though.
The Faith No More cover is the better version imo

Have you heard Freakwater’s version?
When I saw All Them Witches the house sound put on “War Pigs” before the band (who dislike being compared to Sabbath) came on, and the entire audience sang it en masse like it was the national anthem. Which it kinda is now — maybe Hegseth will use it non-ironically and without listening to the words all the way through.

My time is a piece of wax Falling on a termite Who’s choking on the splinters
~Beck, “Loser”
Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.
~Kris Kristofferson, Me and Bobby McGee
The people who love me still ask me, “When are you coming back to town?” I answer, “Quite frankly, when they stop building roads, And all God needs is gravity to hold me down.”
~Alison Kraus, “Gravity”
Four hundred years later, I learned about my roots, And how they traded in their white sheets for badges and blue suits
~Onyx, “Getto Mentalitee”
Is your mother worried? Would you like us to assign someone to worry your mother?
~Chaise Longue by Wet Leg
You want me to love you in moderation Do I look moderate to you?
~Florence + The Machine, “Moderation”
And the salt in my wounds Isn’t burning anymore than it used to. It’s not that I don’t feel the pain It’s just I’m not afraid of hurting anymore.
~Paramore, “Last Hope”
the shit hasn’t even begun to hit the fan.
~Incubus, from “Consequence”
I have a tendency to wear my mind on my sleeve. I have a history of losing my shirt.
~“One Week” by the Barenaked Ladies
One Week has been permanently tied to its usage in Smooth by Neil Cicierega for me
Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.
This one really does make you think, doesn’t it? “Me and Bobby McGee” is a song I listen to for the tune for the most part, but listening to the lyrics is a bit of a different experience.
Worn all great lines. Meaningful as fuck too!
No, this is how it works
You peer inside yourself
You take the things you like
And try to love the things you took
And then you take that love you made
And stick it into some
Someone else’s heart
Pumping someone else’s blood
And walking arm in arm
You hope it don’t get harmed
But even if it does
You’ll just do it all againRegina Spektor - On the Radio
“the dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had” - Bad Word (Tears for Fears)
“Well, Americans don’t care for much of anything
Land and water the least
And animal life is low on the totem pole
With human life not worth more than infected yeast,”“Americans don’t care too much for beauty
They’ll shit in a river, dump battery acid in a stream
They’ll watch dead rats wash up on the beach Complain if they can’t swim” - Last Great American Whale (Lou Reed)the entire songs is magnificent
“We’ll buy some drugs and watch a band / then jump in the river holding hands”
In my life I hope I lie And tell everyone you were a good wife And I hope you die I hope we both die
No Children by The Mountain Goats.
The entire song is lyrically amazing. It’s about a divorcing couple who were frankly broken to begin with. And while just reading the lyrics make it seem like a big downer of a song, it’s in a major key, and there is catharsis to be found in its hatred.Sort of reminds me of Rootless Tree by Damian Rice
It breaks my heart because the chorus goes:
Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you
And all we’ve been through
I said leave it, leave it, leave it if It’s nothing to you
And if you hate me, hate me, hate me
Then hate me so good that you can let me out,
let me out, let me out of this hell when you’re aroundBut the last chorus, goes:
Fuck you, fuck you, I LOVE you
And all we’ve been through
I said leave it, leave it, leave it It’s nothing to you
And if you hate me, hate me, hate me
Then hate me so good that you can let me out,
let me out, let me out of this hell when you’re aroundThat one word change- changes the entire meaning of the song. It’s awful to separate and break up, but to acknowledge the love that remains is… man. It breaks me.
Yeah, that one word change is absolutely the crux of it.
It actually re-reminds me of a live performance of the song I mentioned that I really wish I could find now. Before the song the singer is doing some banter with the audience (which he is super good at), to tell them to sing along and says something along the lines of, “Someday you’re gonna need this song, and I want you to remember when the time comes…and you’ll know when it comes…that I gave you something. And you can say, ‘so much I love you. So much I want you to die now.’” And then they kick in to the song.
On the super super off chance that anyone who sees this knows which mountain goats show that was, let me know.
Hey fuck you, I just got this song out of my head.
It is good though, especially the way it kinda drags and drones, and the lyrics fit somewhat awkwardly in the music. Invokes this feeling of droll persistence that complements the lyrics.
We brag on having bread, but none of us are bakers We all talk having greens, but none of us own acres If none of us own acres, and none of us grow wheat Then who will feed our people when our people need to eat?
Killer Mike ~ Ronald Reagan
Is this how it is?
Is this how it’s always been?
To exist in the face of suffering and death
And somehow still keep singing?Florence + The Machine - Free

I did my best, tried to impress, my childhood dream made flesh
And my dresses and my flowering sadness, so like a woman to profit from her madness
I was only beautiful under the lights, only powerful there
