Are you going to argue that “no-holds-barred” – as in, fighting dirty – isn’t negative?

No-holds-barred is about the rules of engagement, not an individual’s fighting technique. If anything it’s even more positive because it means they can hold their own against people who do fight dirty.

Are you going to argue that the system providing little control and no remedy isn’t a bad thing?

It’s only that way because it’s the police chief who crossed the line. That’s a specific instance where the combination of “police chief” and “political operative” where the system provides little control and no remedy.

It’s good for a chuckle, although it’s wishful thinking to believe the public imagines political operatives and staffers to be like The West Wing. They’ve probably got a bleaker impression than that…

You might as well say “lawyer” is negative because people have bleak impressions of them. Should those on our side avoid studying law because people will think negatively of them? No, obviously, studying law is crucial to the drafting of policy that benefits people.

Likewise, understanding politics and being effective at operating in the political sphere is crucial to actually making things better.

Your argument is bad and you should feel bad. We want skilled political operatives on our side. If you want to whisper your political dreams into a shoebox and make an inoffensive manifestation board, then bug off and do that. The rest of us actually want to accomplish something, and that requires political savvy.

Uh, there are sexist characters, but they’re supposed to seem backwards and regressive. It’s supposed to reflect the sexism of the time in a way that makes it obvious why it needs to be abandoned.

I think you might be overthinking a comic where the punchline is “Hey remember Leatherface from the well-known horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, who had the mask made of human skin? I bet if he referred to “Facebook”, it would be a literal book filled with faces.”

Hell, I’d bet real money that the only reason they specifically mentioned a teenage blonde is because one of the film victims was a teenage blonde. They mention her “hanging” around there, and the blonde teen in the film gets hung on a meat hook.

It sounds like your gripe is with the film, and the horror genre in general. This comic is just a pun.

There is a wide realm of literary subtext between “obvious satire” and “full-throated support”.

I don’t want to be rude, but it really seems like you heard someone on the internet say Starship Troopers was fascist and Heinlein was pro-fascist for writing it, without really evaluating either of those claims for yourself.

The concepts explored were not fascism. The main political concept explored was tying voting rights to civil service, and the vast majority of that service was non-military. What about the book made you think it was exploring fascism?

I really should make this a copypasta, with how often it seems to come up:

No Heinlein was not pro-fascist. That much becomes very obvious if you read, like, literally any of his other books. His politics shifted over his lifetime, but he was broadly an outspoken libertarian, and remarkably progressive for his era.

He explored concepts in his books through the process of writing them. Starship Troopers was one such book. Stranger in a Strange Land was another, started before and finished after Starship Troopers, and presenting basically the polar opposite political ideology.

Eh, I try. I think I succeed more often than not, but most bad people think they’re good, right? I try to calibrate against the broader society as a whole, but it often seems like society isn’t really aligned with goodness anyway. So here I am, trying to suss out the good parts of society and align with that, and trying to suss out the bad parts and follow my own moral compass there. But again, bad people probably generally think they’re good, so it’s a bit of a conundrum innit?

Minimize harm to others, and try to help as much as you can. Except sometimes harming bad people somewhat is good, and sometimes help is counterproductive.

I’m confident that I am a person. I try to emulate what good is like. Life is hard.

I got yelled at and forced as a kid, and much worse, and I grew up to be probably the single most useful adult I know. I didn’t resent cooking because I was forced to cook, I don’t resent taking out the trash because I was forced to, or washing the dishes, or yardwork, or laundry.

These are things that need to get done, and without someone to do them for me I need to do them. If you incentivize learning those habits with praise and an ice cream cone, you just teach the child that if they don’t feel like ice cream they don’t have to do anything.

Seems to me that you’re wildly exaggerating a fairly normal situation, and making unfounded generalizations about parenting and child psychology. Yes positive reinforcement is generally good, and no I wouldn’t recommend my draconian upbringing, but the world is not black and white. There is a time for positive reinforcement, and a time for negative reinforcement.

People who have kids just to use them for cheap labor shouldn’t have had kids to begin with. Mr. “no such thing as an ex marine” is just passing off abuse as discipline, like what was done to him.

You’re calling this situation “abuse”, which is outrageously out of touch with reality.

It is good and normal for children to do reasonable chores, or else they grow up into useless adults who think emptying the dishwasher is tantamount to slavery.
