Jesse Thorn, host of @NPR’s Bullseye makes non-evidence-based claims about gender-transition surgeries for adolescents.

There is no evidence that such surgeries prevent suicide. There is so little research about them, for starters. And Finnish research into the connection between cross-sex hormone treatment and suicide in youths did not find such a link.

As for medical necessity, this is a term that WPATH spliced into its trans care guidelines for adolescents knowing they did not have the research to back it up. What they wanted was to ensure that insurers covered such medical interventions.

As for “rare,” during the several years leading up to these practices being widely banned, about 1,000 biological girls had a gender transition mastectomy annually. That is according to an analysis by @LeorSapir. Some people think that is a high number. Others think it constitutes rarity.

One question that supporters of these practices have always been unable to answer is this: If the need for these mastectomies is so intrinsically dire, why were there not waves of suicides among teenagers wanting their breasts removed prior to the 2010s?

“I’m just asking questions ‘Ben Ryan’” stinks of center-right libertarian nonsense. Why are you screenshotting some nonce from X subposting folks from Bluesky? There is clearly an agenda with this guy.

From what I can tell, that seems to be the whole point of this stupid sub. Just a bunch of TERFs trying to dress their bigotry up in academic language.

This community is for critical analysis, mostly focused on specific claims. Screenshots like this capture various sides of a particular debate and provide specific claims to analyze. People are terrible at reading article links before commenting, so screenshots help real discussion vs generic rants.

For example, nonce he may be, but what exactly does the Finnish study say? What doesn’t it say? Does it have methodological flaws that affect any conclusions we can draw from it?

All-cause and suicide mortalities among adolescents and young adults who contacted specialised gender identity services in Finland in 1996–2019: a register study

Conclusions Clinical gender dysphoria does not appear to be predictive of all-cause nor suicide mortality when psychiatric treatment history is accounted for.

Posting something here doesn’t mean it’s correct, it means there’s something interesting to analyze.

Yeah. Your “critical analysis” is debating people’s existence. You guys are essentially just high-brow bigots hiding your bigotry in language that sounds like it would be published in a scientific journal.
