The FromSoft character creators are quite notorious for allowing people to create… unique characters. Bar creating astoundingly beautiful and serious characters, what was a character that you thoroughly enjoyed conceptualising, creating, and playing with? Maybe you had a certain head canon or backstory for the character?
I ended up foretelling my going bald and having glasses with my first Bloodborne character, funnily enough. He was bald and had small, round glasses. Initially thought to be a random ass character, except for the small glasses, that’s basically me now. Man, fondly thinking of the time when I still had hair. Laughs in male pattern baldness 🥲
Curious to see your characters!
I did an Iron Tarkus cosplay build in DKS1. Stuck with the heavy roll and chose the wolf ring and ring of steel protection. Dumped pretty much everything into strength, health, and endurance.
It actually performed a lot better than I thought it would. Any physical damage build I was up against was pretty immediately shocked at how little damage I took.
Mine are gonna be Elden Ring characters simply because it’s the one I’ve put the most time into. My favourite is probably the character I made to learn parrying with, Mara of Eochaid. The “of Eochaid” part was only added after I fought the Limgrave bell-bearing hunter with her and had the idea to make her another relic of the lost country like Elemer. I had already been planning on doing the Frenzied Flame route with her after watching Sekiro Dubi’s recreation of Kale’s cut quest, so the storyline began to form in my head: she finds kinship with a few of the merchants, connecting with them over their shared lost homes. When she learns of Elemer, a fellow Eochaidan, going around turning the legacy of her old country into one of the ruthless murder of her merchant friends, she makes it her mission to hunt him down
Honourable mentions go to Crucible Knight Cambrius, who I like because I was pleased with the grizzled old paladin look I got for him, and Gloam-Eye, who I used to leave messages to other players in places like the Frenzied Flame Proscription or the first place you appear in Farum Azula after the Forge of the Giants
Love these characters you’ve created. If you had to choose, which of these three would be your favourite?
Mara, she’s the one that started off as an actual regular character instead of a cosplay build that I wound up having more fun than I expected with
Those are some fantastic characters!
The evolution of Mara is particularly interesting. The background of the character merged so seamlessly with the new story. Aristocrat Hat looks pretty good with Briar Armor. I don’t think I ever wore this hat even though it drops in every second playthrough.
If you want to disrespect the Bell Bearing Hunter, you can yeet the Bell Bearing Hunter in Caelid off the cliff like so. But since you made this character for parrying (and are still playing on it?), this can be a pretty high-octane parrying fight; one miss and you’re dead.Did you switch through all Crucible weapons with Cambrius, or did you use mostly the Ordovis’s Greatsword? The weapon arts of the Crucible weapons are so busted.
Gloam-Eye is inspired! I love the last scene in the Frenzied Flame ending, and you nailed Melina’s look. What did you write in the messages at these fitting places? Is the name Gloam-Eye an allusion to the Gloam-Eyed Queen or just about her eye?
I really should make up more of a background for my characters and/or make themed playthroughs. I usually just pick from one of my templates, change it a bit for 30 seconds, and then start playing.
Thank you! I’ll try to answer everything
Mara’s playthrough is complete now; she defeated the promised consort, struck down the Elden Beast, and went on to boil the skies with the Frenzied Flame. She shall burn everything down to one, at least until Melina catches up with her and avenges Torrent
I definitely won’t be cheesing any variant of Elemer because I just love fighting him! Parrying him is a blast because, as you say, he hits like a truck, but his moves are all very well telegraphed and his moveset basically requires you to stick close to him
For Cambrius I stuck with Ordovis’ greatsword whenever I could, but I had the gargoyle’s greatsword upgraded for when I needed something more versatile. It looks the part with the crucible knight gear, and sometimes a sword dealing holy damage is just absolutely not the tool for the job. Siluria’s tree is excellent, but my first playthrough of ER was a str/fai build using spears and halberds so it felt like I was re-treading familiar ground a little much. Devonia’s hammer, unfortunately, is way too big for me to like how it looks. Ordovis’ sword served me excellently, though! The vortex ash and AotC: horns are outright comical against Malenia in particular
Gloam-Eye’s name is indeed a reference to the Gloam-Eyed Queen, though I don’t personally think that Melina is the GEQ, at least not as she was. I think it’s more likely that Melina is some kind of re-making of her by Marika, or maybe a fragment of the GEQ in the same way that Millicent is to Malenia. I mostly think that for the actual GEQ to have as much agency as Melina does, limited as it is, would require Maliketh to have done a far worse job of killing her than his fearsome reputation would suggest and for Marika to be far more merciful than she usually is. At the same time, I didn’t want to just make Melina because I wanted to play with all the black flame incantations and the black knife while keeping a theme intact (though I did keep the blade of calling ready too)
The messages I’d leave tried to be in character. The one at the start of Farum Azula, which people would only see right after burning the Erdtree, was something like “friend, O friend, still no regret.” Another was in the office where you get the blade of calling, which was just “Ahh, seems familiar…” Naturally they all had to include gestures so that any readers could see her
While I’m not going to do it myself, that BBH kill was way too clever to just be a cheese. That was some shinobi shenanigans right there
Great choices on all three 👌
I’m partial to the rotten duelist greaves with the briar armor myself, the red kilt matches well.

Ready to throw down some moves at the windmill party
Ooh, I shall be sure to try that out next time I’m on the game. She’s currently wearing scaled greaves and gauntlets to bump her poise up enough that I can get away with not having a helmet on, which works well enough with the briar set for me (though it’d be nice if they were just a touch darker)
God dammit you absolutely nailed the Eustace Bagge look there
Got it off the net, I’m afraid - not my creation. My description made it sound like that, though, I realise
gets eaten by giant dog in Caelid
“STUPID DOG! YA MADE ME LOOK BAD!”
I make characters that fit in the lore, and the best one I had was Arby of Irithyll. Only used the 4 frost weapons in DS3 and wore the Irithyll knight armor. Absolute beast with Vordt’s Hammer.
Forgot DS3 is the ONLY fucking game in the series without cloud saving so I lost him when my previous PC died 😩 I do not even remember the stats he had.
I have many hundreds of hours in Bloodborne, helped around 300+ hunters over the years beat bosses. So, yeah, I would Bloodborne. 😉
Cool! And what’s your favourite player character you created in all these hours?
Did a bloodtinge, arcane, and quality build. Honestly, arcane is super fun!
I have made so many PvP builds in all the Dark Souls and Elden Ring I couldn’t even count. Though I tend to enjoy lore appropriate characters with some sets of personal rules to my invasions.
The ones based off enemy mobs and NPCs I just try to engage in the same way NPC invaders do. Edgewalking, sidestepping, and just aggro and chase. My Cathedral Knight in DS3 is probably my favorite one. Aptly named Deacon and he sits in the Cathedral.
My favorite Elden Ring invader would only be allowed to do sneak backstabs and attempt parries and ripostes. No standup fights, double splody physick like its a cyanide pill if caught.
The best invasions are where the host and I double KO, followed by when I closely lose.
