Changing course (“rerouting”) also uses that pronunciation. However, highway “routes” can be pronounced with that same vowel, or as “root” like a plant root.

Woodworking: outer is pronounced outer
Computer: outer is pronounced ooter
Route
Direction: oute is pronounced oot
Rout
Complete loss in sport/battle: out is pronounced out
