The whole “I don’t understand cats, so they must be assholes” trope is not very wholesome, imo

I understand cats deeply, and some are just assholes and I love those ones, too. One of my cats is a jerk who only loves me and regularly bites other people who try to pet him more than a couple times, or who walk by him without announcing their presence or holding their hand out so he can sniff it and grant passage, most notably my wife. He has been immensely patient with my young child in a way he is with nobody else.

I think OP understands cats quite well. This is totally wholesome and relatable to people who actually love cats enough to adopt and appreciate even the surly ones. They have a very wide range of temperaments, much like people, many of whom are assholes. When I adopted my little asshole, his foster name was the same as a mob boss because “He is the boss, he makes the rules. Also he’s a bit bitey” and I was like, “hell yeah, give me that little shithead” and I’d do it again. I have a different cat I can wear as a hat. This post is not about cats like that.

I have a cat that loves and wants pets from all humans but hates anything that moves and is not human with a burning passion. After three years of targeted training I can lure her into sitting next to the dog for a treat and she grabs it and carries it away from the dog to eat.

Oh I understand the cats. And sometimes they are assholes. Usually they are sweet little devils that underestimate their sharp claws. But they will do stuff they know is not allowed in order to get your attention. You could say your fault for not giving enough attention to the cat, but that doesn’t mean it can just destroy the furniture.

A well raised cat is less of an asshole than an ignored one though

I’ve lived with 4 cats so far and I can safely say that even though they have distinct personality, living with a cat is like living with a small furry Sheldon Cooper.
