For modern AAA games I’d say that’s pretty accurate of a recommendation despite the costs associated with ram. Ideally games should be optimized to run on 8Gb but windows and other software is probably going to happily eat up a few gigs.

With Linux I can run all those apps that the article say plus whatever I’m playing and hardly enough I get close to 12 or 15 gb of ram.

Well, how would Rimworld solve this?

              1. Buy SSDs
              2. Buy basic medical equipment
              3. Be in debt
              4. When debt collectors arrive, incapacitate them, then sell their organs to a passing spaceship
              5. Use free organ-money to pay off debt
              6. Use SSD space to install more Rimworld mods
              7. If SSD is full, repeat from #1

I’m not sure how well this would work in real life. It’s probably considered impolite, immoral or illegal or something.

Even on linux I’d give the same recommendation of 16gb for gaming and 32gb for no worries.

I haven’t bothered to read the article yet, but I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume they want our PCs to be so overpowered in order to better run their AI bullshit. Gonna turn us into a distributed datacentre or something.

No, they were just suggesting 32gb ram as the no worries tier and 16gb as the recommendation for gaming. Pretty reasonable as everyone has been saying this for the past half a decade.

So they’re going to run an AI farm bot net through copilot, I could totally see them being deluded enough to try that.

I have 64gb, and everyone was like why, you don’t need that much, it’s a waste etc.

Three years down the road, I don’t regret it, let’s put it that way. Yeah it’s not really necessary, but I knew this would happen (not the ram price stuff - the sloppy coding and the gaming world’s ever expanding requirements).

I run 64gb just cuz I have it sitting around haha. That said, I immediately booted down my win11 machine and swapped to Linux after reading that. It’s just their brazen ways of conducting business that has pushed me away as a consumer of their products. Anyone wanna buy a win11 pro license? I’m done with it. I’m just done with microslop. I’ll still use MS products at my work (I’m in IT so there’s no escaping!) but if given a choice I will always steer away from them. It sucks too because I grew up using windows/microsoft and always backed them. Nowadays I just can’t…

Not really sure why there was outrage for this. 16GB has been seen as the minimum going back to COVID times? (If I recall correctly?) 32GB is a reasonable amount to recommend if they expect a user will also be running a browser and discord while gaming.

The windows 11 team at Microsoft isn’t responsible for the realities of modern software. The community bulling them into pretending that 32GB isn’t a good recommendation these days doesn’t actually help anything
