Many people here get quite touchy when it comes to politics and such, but outside of that it’s pretty nice that I can pretty much post about whatever interests me and people show up in the comments being encouraging and genuinely curious.
So many times in real-life interactions I start talking about something I’m into, only to realize the other person doesn’t really get it or just isn’t interested so I just then steer the discussion to other things. Over time you learn to keep all that stuff to yourself, and it almost starts building up inside you. Then you end up dumping it on someone again and immediately regret it, which then just reinforces this negative loop.
Not here though. I could probably start making animal figures from pine cones tomorrow and posting them, and it’d likely hit the “front page” with dozens of comments in no time.
It’s almost like there’s this inner child in me who still wants to play, but that’s embarrassing so it needs to stay hidden from “normal” people. Still, I suspect pretty much everyone is hiding that same part of themselves, and we’d all be a lot better off letting it out and not taking ourselves so seriously all the time.
The lack of ridicule continues to astound me. I recently made a post asking about Linux, as I’m 50 and know/knew jack all about it. Not only was I not ridiculed to death about my ignorance, but there seemed to be actual joy people showed in getting to inform/educate. I love this.
The Linux community here is awesome and basically opposite of the common stereotype
Except if you mention anything positive about Windows, or ask a question about it. Then they become hateful and petty.
Why would you ask a Linux community about Windows?
Would you go into an iOS community and ask questions about Android? It makes no sense.
Like 80% of the Linux community got actively driven away from Windows because of the abusive environment that it creates.
You’re coming to someone’s wedding and insisting on talking about their ex, of course they’re testy about it.
“You’re coming to someone’s wedding…”
Yeah maybe if you post it in the Linux communities that makes sense, but I see this in almost every community on Lemmy. I’m sorry but they don’t own the Fediverse and shouldn’t be dictating it. To that end, they are very toxic.
In fact, we literally do own the fediverse. Power to the people. There is no corporation in charge, Lemmy is and is hosted by its users. Every instance you interact with is probably hosted on a Linux server. The fediverse is made up of primarily Linux users. We are here specifically because we reject the corpo-first nature of the technological community at large, Windows is a huge part of that.
If you want to talk about Windows then make a Windows community. But don’t be surprised when the average Fediverse user outside of that community has nothing nice to say about it. Microsoft is antithetical to the values that built this website.
I’m not disagreeing that was your experience but that was not my experience. I recently tried to switch to Linux but I could not get the one game I actually play to work, the game is World of Warcraft. I mentioned it in a comment and one dude basically called me an idiot because even his “tech illiterate mom could get it to work”.
I do appreciate that the guy was pretty heavily downvoted and most people were kind about it though. I’ll try again because I do want to switch off of Windows, but I have to overcome lazy first lol
I use Linux and happened to just start playing on a private server. I also play Starcraft 2 from time to time.
There are three ways you can get it working:
-
Start the battle net launcher through Lutris. There is a launch profile you can download directly in Lutris to get it working.
-
Start the launcher through Steam. You may need to change the version of Proton in the compatibility options.
-
Start the launcher directly using Wine or WineTricks. This option is less user-friendly but will serve you in getting other Windows apps working on Linux.
I think it was Wine and Lutris that I tried, but just could not get Blizzard going. It either stuck on updating or froze entirely at startup. I plan on trying it again because I would 100% love to switch, it’s just wow that’s the sticking point for me.
I’ll get back to it eventually. I’ll do more research before I try again. Appreciate the tips!
-
Gaming has been the #1 sticking point for me too. Even with the various compatibility tools, only about 70% of my library works on Linux, so I’m stuck with a dual-boot.
Yeah, for me it’s really just wow that I play, otherwise I’m typically reading. I tried with Ubuntu, couldn’t get it going. I was looking at Bazzite I think it’s called, but there was some yellow flag about my video card and I was just kind of over it that day. I’ll be giving it another try one of these days lol
I love that.
I switched to a Mint dual-boot a year ago and I love it.
So… can we see the pine cone figures, or what?
:)
Yes. Give us the pine cone figures!
The normal people you speak of for the most part are pretty much also just trapped in that very feedback loop. Lots of folks feel very intense pressure to conform to ‘normality’. Comes across in everything they do, watch, listen to, wear, and so on.
Rejection is just that powerful, and people contort themselves to avoid it. Funny thing tho, being your authentic self and thriving in it is actually a form of rejection as well; you’re rejecting their concept of normality. You’re quietly saying that the lengths they go to fit in, the sacrifices they make, are all for nothing.
This is how you give birth to “haters”. People who have no leverage over you via simple disinterest or rejection, so they have to actively try to drag you down to the appropriate “normal” level of misery with them.
However! This is also how you find other genuine, amazing people who make the hours fly by just by sharing their love of the world with you.
I say all this because it can be very intense to encounter your haters. But they’re not who you’re looking for. So it’s very much worth maintaining your excitement for pine cone sculptures or whatever. Everything that brings you joy in this life is gonna motivate some people to want to bring you down. Just respectfully disengage, and keep your beautiful energy intact for the next person
Hell yeah, brother.
Look at this fucking asshole and their hobbies…
Lol jk
The Intrusive thought won this time lol
Hey, if you’re gonna start making animal figures out of pinecones, you might be interested in the becorn guy. https://m.youtube.com/@davidmbird
;)
I learned a while ago to stop giving a hoot what people think about me and just be me. Kid and all. It can take a while but you can find a real in life crowd who throws down like you do. But until then. One of us. One of us. One of us.
Everybody wants to play, just some folks can’t or won’t admit that to themselves. Having interests and hobbies is what defines us as people. And yeah, OP, whether you have 50 Gundam models, carve spoons from reclaimed barn wood, paint photo-negative landscape images on full drywall sheets, make pinecone animals, or play the ukulele, I am here for it.
It’s a little harder to find the special interests groups here than reddit, but folks here are for sure more appreciative and accepting of each other’s passions.
Maybe we need a non-specific hobby community to post our whatevers to. Is there one already?

Lemmy is niche. Let it become popular and see how fast that changes. 😭
We are really, really good overall about appreciating other people’s joy.
Unless it’s an interest in metabolic health. Anything about that gets downvoted into oblivion.
