    So my only thought about joining NATO… since it’s a defensive pact, the moment they join, they would immediately trigger Article 5. Wouldn’t the vote then basically “going to war with Russia” vs “joining NATO for future defense”?

    Don’t get me wrong, I fully believe Ukraine should get all the support and Russia is attacking a sovereign nation, but I’m trying to figure out logistics of it, if it were to happen right now.

      One criteria for joining NATO is

      no territorial disputes is a prerequisite to joining NATO, as a member with such a dispute would be automatically considered under attack by the occupying entity

      That’s why they haven’t joined yet, because they’re under attack by Russia. That’s one reason why Putin won’t end the war, because if he does, Ukraine joins NATO, and then he can’t attack Ukraine again without them invoking article 5
