As much as I love this meme and the original, this was actually not a brainfart by Dubya. He just realized mid-sentence that the last part “Shame on me” could be used as a negative soundbite if cut. Or at least that’s how it was spun.
One could still call that a brainfart, speaking before he knew what he was saying. Just a more normal human reaction rather than the tailored mass-market messaging most politicians try to deliver.
Tbh I honestly have grown to like the quote for its (I assume) unintended meaning.
To paraphrase:
“Fool me once, fuck you I’m not going to trust you anymore.”
It has grown to be more of a “trust people when they show you who they really are” to me over these years than the gaffe I’m sure it was. Can’t get fooled again, because I won’t give them another opportunity to.
