Back when the big flock from Reddit to Lemmy took place, I used this account to post this Unpopular Opinion:
Erasing your Reddit history is an asshole move, and does not really help “the cause”

If you check the profiles of the most ardent anti-Reddit voices from that thread, you would notice that most of them disappeared from Lemmy shortly after that, or a few months later at best.

Where did they go? Back to Reddit of course.

Lessons learned? Beware that the loudest most uncompromising voices regarding a cause when enthusiasm for it is at its peak, are often the ones who are the least committed to it.

Do note that neither the reaction back then, nor this retrospect came as a surprise to me.

You are not wrong but you should tell it to them, not us. Everyone here is here because they chose to stay

Community has “Lemmy” in its name, sidebar mentions vents, and I’m not genuinely angry or emotionally charged about this, the title is just exaggerated.

I don’t know. It felt appropriate here. And it definitely counts as a shitpost from my own perspective.

Do you have any evidence that they went back to reddit and didn’t just account/instance hop? I’m in that thread under a previous account, but this is like my 4th or 5th account. I go back to some of them, but I like scoping out different sections of Lemmy/mbin to get a feel for where has the best vibe.

Ditto. My original account was on kbin.social, so it’s not like I even have the option to use it anymore. I’m sure plenty of people started out on one of the big, general instances, then eventually moved elsewhere.

I wrote “the majority”, not everyone.

      Also

Akshually, we are all here. everyone is just using 10 different alts.

That would be almost worse with the real size/reach of Lemmy in mind, that is if this was true. Good thing it isn’t.

It was always a bit of a pipe dream to think we could draw enough users to have a notable impact, because the majority of people just don’t care. Plain and simple. Fine with me, they can have their little racist narwhal, and I’ll be here reading bitter rants for amusement.

I agree lightly on not deleting posts, but probably because that account holds 10+ years of my life. I also have a post that people follow up with me on once or twice a year because it is in relation to a difficult to get book relating to severe depression. A big part of me feels wrong taking a resource away from vulnerable people looking for help.

I still check specialized subreddits when I need specific information, and I check for any messages to see if someone needs a hand. That said, I nearly completely lessened my contribution to a company I no longer respect, that’s a good enough for me.

I had a near 800k karma account, I overwrote every post with gibberish before deleting it.

It was my account and my effort went into it. I’m not telling anyone else what to do, but I thought it would be hilarious to leave all those information gaps.

Yeah those are pretty bad people, the people who were also affected by Reddits bullshit. They are are the true cause of this. /s
