“The space researcher was allegedly randomly checked on arrival, during which his professional computer and personal telephone were allegedly searched. Similarly, messages about the Trump administration’s treatment of scientists have been found.”

Don’t start. You never had democracy in the first place. Yes, now it is even worse but it has never been good.

Cynicism isn’t helpful. The U.S. was a democracy and now that’s in jeopardy. To pretend that an imperfect democracy is equivalent to the electoral autocracy we seem to be headed for is disingenuous and betrays the many substantiative freedoms we enjoyed under the former.

Technically, it’s a republic. In a full democracy, the citizens would vote on everything directly. You know all those bills that Congress votes on? We’d handle them ourselves.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think a country has ever operated that way. It’s a logistical nightmare.

Edit: if something here is factually incorrect, an actual explanation would be helpful. Thanks.

As an anarchist I would love direct democracy immeasurably more than what we currently have. You aren’t wrong. It is a republic, a Democratic Republic; that uses representative democracy. But that doesn’t argue against it being a democracy. Just not a direct democracy. Which by the fact that we have an actual name for it. Means that there are other types of democracies that aren’t direct democracies. Such as Democratic Republics.

Like I’ve said elsewhere I’m not defending our current system it fucking sucks. But the problem with it is more that there aren’t safeguards to keep the wealthy from capturing it. And that the wealthy have captured it. It can function marginally okay without them in control. But I don’t know that that’s ever really happened in our country’s history. I’m absolutely for replacing it with something more democratic.

Some shit that doesn’t represent people in any way. Just a monarchy where a monarch is substituted with a few hundred mini-kings. Especially in the USA where people never even had a right to elect those mini-kings.

That’s literally because of capture by the wealthy and powerful. Not the system itself. Yes the system doesn’t have proper safeguards against it. But you’re not criticizing the system you’re criticizing people who control it currently.

Encrypt everything. Consider carrying your computer with a dummy account on it, and all your actual stuff on NextCloud or similar. Then reload your computer after you get thru security. I would not even think of carrying anything incriminating thru security. Who needs the hassle?

I’m talking about travel anywhere, but especially the US. Sometimes one has to go somewhere for good reason, and mitigation of risk is needed.

“incriminating” to be clear here, criticism of a political person should not cause you to be denied entry. That’s fucking insane. On the other hand, yes. Everything has to be encrypted, locked, and def have a dummy OS. I’m going to need to set some up.

Yes, I would consider getting myself a cheap phone in a clean state to travel with, and only logging into accounts after crossing into my destination country. But I’d rather just avoid the USA.

Fedora makes full drive encryption stupid easy during initial install. I try to keep a habit of backing up my data and never having a computer in a state that i cant easily wipe and reload the OS; Games and non-system-required data on a separate physical drive, not a partition.

Assume microsoft has a copy of bitlocker keys if using Windows, they are heavily in bed with the US government and will sell you out for a piece of chewing gum.
