    Happy new year!

December was a pretty good month overall for Superbowl. I should have checked subs before and after the Owl of the Year tournament, but there’s definitely a few new ones, and there’s a few people in the comments that weren’t there before.

I did some year end review items, like the top posts of the year and a list of posts I felt didn’t get as many looks as maybe they should have to try to encourage people to revisit content they may have missed.

My main goal for this year is to try and get more international content. I try to avoid being to America centric, but only speaking English limits me in finding things. I don’t know how to say my keywords like “raptor hospital” in every language, but I’m working on running various attempts at guessing what they may be on Google Translate and I am finding a few rescues around the world to try to bring in different perspectives about taking care of wildlife in all different locations with different species.

I already try to always list weights and measures in metric and imperial, and I’ve been taking feedback about things like names, as the owls don’t have the same names in different parts of the world, some users may know them under different names. I like when people chime in about when they have different names in their country as it lets us get an idea about what people there thought were good descriptions of the animals and we learn some about how other languages work.

I think it may bring in more people to the community, and even if not, we might learn more about each other anyway and I’m addition to feeling closer to animals we might never meet, we can also feel closer to the people from those places too and end up carrying a little more about them as well.

    Happy New Year everyone!

!hardware@lemmy.world is enjoying steady growth, engagement trajectory is at last growing. Biggest issue is few non-mod posts. I initially created this community because there was no active generic hardware community on lemmy and the only semi-active one was on ML. However, my goal was to get to a critical mass, where I didn’t have to post regularly. Seems like this will take a while and will probably require a reddit migration to push up lemmy/threadiverse to at least over 100K stable MAUs.

!monitors@lemm.ee, while small, has a somewhat decent engagement trajectory.

!gaminglaptops@lemmy.world and to a lesser extent !laptops@lemmy.world feel somewhat stagnant even with regular (mod initiated) posts.

A few people have posted in !journaling@sh.itjust.works. So, it’s not just me posting new content anymore, and that’s a huge step in the right direction. Yeah! (edit: and it’s great content, btw ;))

The subscriber count is also slowly growing (we’ve reached 280, I have not noted the base numbers but I would say we’re 50 more subscribers if not more), which is great too.

I still would love to see more activities going on. I mean more comments and new posts non-authored by me. Obviously, that would be easy for me to write more posts but I really don’t want to give people the false impression I ‘own’ the community—I don’t, I try to encourage more activities that’s all. I know Lemmy is much smaller than Reddit; in their s/journaling they have around 2 millions subscribers which is a little more than our grand-total of 282 subscribers ;) but I would say one new post a week or every couple week would be great.

A few days ago, like I announced, I replaced the old banner/icon with new ones to celebrate the beginning of a new year. Beside one person that commented on my first proposal a couple weeks ago (after which I almost completely changed said proposition) there has been no reaction beside very few likes. I even mentioned I kept the old set so I could easily put it back in case they preferred it to the new one. I’m no designer, so maybe it’s just trash and people are too kind to let me know, or they simply don’t care? It’s hard to tell without feedback.

    Happy New Year !

Happy New Year to you, and everyone here :)

Don’t worry, it was really horrible people would let you know 😄

It is good that not every post in !AskUSA@discuss.online is contributed by a mod:-).

On the other hand, the most popular content also attracts those who just seem to want to say “eat shit and die” - like c’mon, at least tell us why you feel that way!? /s :-P

Ah, the downside of a post making it to /all :)
