#VLC4 finally has an official release date in December 2026. I’ve just seen it ^^ #VLC #OpenSource #FOSS
I was still on version 4.0 from November 2025… Wow, there’ve been some changes to the menu bar. Why put it on the side WITHOUT the option to go back to the old one?
Maybe I didn’t look properly either…
But whilst I can understand it for much longer tab lists, with just five menus we’re losing space already taken up by the top bar (where the logo is).

It’s all very easy to cast the first stone at an open-source, volunteer-run project. But if ChatGPT says so, then I suppose I should trust it blindly, knowing that it has the same interface for its menus… What’s that… A conflict of interest? No, come on, not at all! It’s surely just a pure coincidence that VLC is adopting this just as they’re also planning to integrate ‘artificial intelligence’ for subtitle generation 🤔 I don’t know – just as I don’t know how this subtitling will turn out. What’s certain is that I hope there’ll be an option to switch between the two, just as there’s an option to show the menu bar in the preferences.
I looked for that option for a while and never figured it out. I used ChatGPT too.
