No smoke here, just heat, but we’re starting to cool down after heat wave round 3. Round 4 might be on its way but opinions and analysis can’t seem to agree.
R-Type takes some serious memo indeed. I can do the first two levels, the Warship is 50:50, stage 4 can go to hell. Even credit feeding that game to the end is satisfying.
Went back to another game that didn’t click we me and realized that the issue was skill. Danmaku Unlimited 3 didn’t hit any notes with me the first time I tried, but now I get it and everything feels less frantic. Awesome little game. I didn’t even know there were things to unlock or different modes. I had only played it for about 30 minutes and shelved it. I think I put in about 10 hours this week.

World News@lemmy.world•American-style tipping system is gaining ground in the NetherlandsEnglish
7·3 days agoThis is not a great idea. You cannot just flip a switch and make up a tipping culture. Countries that do tips have laws about them and how they are declared and distributed. I’m from Canada, but in my province if you tip at a restaurant, the tips are pooled for everybody working at the restaurant and then declared. In other places, that is not allowed and tips go straight to the pocket of the wait staff.
Don’t let this become a thing.
Tips at a restaurant/café, hotel, hairdresser, taxi, some deliveries… maybe.
Tipping at a fast food joint, a Starbucks, drive through, retail store. Nope nope nope.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Anyone have links to studies that reflect poorly on AI?
4·5 days agoIT should provide you with reasons to adopt AI. It isn’t your job to show them the negatives. The entire thing is a net negative.
If companies have the goal of making money, AI will end up costing them as much as human labour and deskill the workers resulting in lower productivity.
If you find any studies that you don’t have access to, mention me and I’ll see if I have access (I’m a prof so free for me).
Switch, arcade, normal controls. I like twin-stick too, though.
Lots of quarter-munchers! When my local arcade was open it was very focused on fighting games, and I spent a lot of time watching people play those. I have no recollection of ever seeing a shmup there.
Hpw do you run ads for child abuse?
Instagram has been profiting off paid adverts that promote CSAM in India
OK…
How did we get here?
Earlier this year, Meta announced it was trying to reduce its reliance on third party human moderators by — you guessed it — switching to AI.
That’s what they said would happen…
How bad is it?
The videos promote child abuse and invite you to join a Telegram group to have access to it. So, that’s bad, and also sounds like a honeypot.
You’re right about Cygni. I was sure it was on Switch.
Mr Heli is such a cool game, super hard but highly replayable.
Nice. I only own…two or three? R-Type II for Game Boy and Sophstar on Switch… I feel like I have one more but not sure.
Yet again we are cooking here in France! I decided to bust out Under Defeat this week. The first few times I tried, I didn’t get into it. Now I look forward to playing. Still too hard, but that’s to be expected.
I got a 1CC of Hazelnut Hex this week too. Awesome game, and the dev has posted it for free on Archive.org (link)
Steredenn’s rogue-like aspect is what turns me off. I like a few rogue-likes, but I think I would enjoy that game if it were just a regular shmup sans rogue-like. I could try it again.
I also planned on getting the IREM collections but read about wonky emulation, especially compared to the ACA versions of some games.
Using AzorMX’s list (which I also read and enjoy) as a starting point…
- Valfaris: Mecha Therion
This is a cool game, but not a shmup
- Tengai
Psikyo games have input lag (I still love them).
- Steredenn: Binary Stars
Not a shmup, I couldn’t get into this one enough to bother trying to finish a run. Cool music.
- Strikers 1945
Psikyo, see above.
Games I haven’t played but have been told to avoid on Switch:
- Steam-Heart’s Saturn Tribute
- Sonic Wings Reunion
- IREM Collections
- CYGNI

World News@lemmy.world•‘Better safe than sorry’: Greece installs floating barrier to ward off toxic fishEnglish
13·14 days agoIt’s a pufferfish
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraodontidae
They eat crabs, shrimp, small lobsters, mollusks, algae, starfish, sea urchins, sponges, coral polyps
They have teeth that can take a chunk out of you. They are poisonous. Homer Simpson ate one.
Vinu is a good reviewer and player. He puts the games through the paces, does live tests, shows up on other channels, 1cc commentaries, the works. Great stuff.
Bonjour (faut bien répondre).

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Why the French are painting their windows with chalk to beat the heat
11·16 days agoI haven’t seen this yet, but it wouldn’t surprise me because I had the same idea. People are trying everything because every shop is sold out of fans and mobile AC units, and the mylar film stuff. Crazy. Even spray bottles.
I thought there might be at least one shmup. The R9 from R-Type? The Vic Viper? Silver Hawk? Fighting Thunder?
Still really cool though!
I hate it. I open the windows in winter. I live in Normandy and we’re on the last stretch. Luckily we had a working fan, every shop in town is sold out!
The warning we had last Saturday at midnight was intense:

We’ll have an OK week then another heatwave the second week of July. I’ve a mini-AC on order!
