  • Her whole body wracked with pain from her semblance overuse, but she ignored it.

Grammatically incorrect line, easy enough fix to “Pain wracked her whole body” instead.

Then, she took out her banner. “I don’t suppose you’ve seen the matching banner to this one?”

Yusha tilted her head. She had not. “Can’t say I have. What about this one?” She pulled out her own banner; it looked vaguely similar to Haru’s.

“Uh, yeah. That’s the matching banner to mine,” Haru replied.

This exchange was a bit weird. Like, why would both the narration and Yusha herself say “no” and then she pull out the banner and confirm that yes, it is the matching banner?

From the start of the island, she’s been on the backfoot of things and running for her life.

Tense issue: should be “she’d been on the backfoot”

Caught in thought, her foot got caught on a root and she fell tumbling down a hill.

Quick repetition of “caught” stands out here. Could change one of them like “lost in thought” or “snagged on a root”.

“Sorry to keep you waiting,” she said to the Grimm, even though they don’t speak or understand things like people do.

So, the “don’t” here isn’t the right tense but the second half of the sentence reads a little wonky to me. I would have phrased it something like “more for herself since Grimm weren’t known to possess speech or even higher thought beyond the destruction of humanity”.

I can see what you’re doing echoing the canon initiation for Beacon (complete w/ part of the team dragging a bigger Grimm after them) and I’m not against it. It’s a nice nod without being a direct rip-off IMO.

There were some issues I had with understanding just what was happening this chapter (stuff like, how was Haru carrying the unconscious Yusha? Fireman carry? Piggy-back? over-the-shoulder?) but mostly minor stuff. I can see the intense shipping going on here but I’ve never been the best judge of that, not really one to engage in it myself.

Sorry it took so long for me to get to this, it was a long work week and I’m still not recharged yet.

  • Yeah, Miles Luna voices Jaune which is why so many call foul for him getting so much screentime. Oddly enough – apart from that one scene in V3 where Jaune (Miles) talks to Neptune (Kerry) alone – I don’t actually believe he’s the writer’s self-insert. I do think they use Jaune as a crutch, tho, and if I may don my tin-foil hat I’ll say part of it is because they don’t know how to write women.

As for fanfiction, Jaune being the only available male of the main cast – the Renora ship is near-universally beloved by the fandom so basically Ren is off the table as a ship target – has made him THE author self-insert of the fanfiction space. It helps that he was canonically written as the audience surrogate, so re-imagining him as the pathetic anime MC with secret superpowers (think Naruto or Ichigo) was easy to do before and after we got his official Semblance.

  • I was going to say that I doubt they would because of how far out they’ve gone from ATLA but then I remembered there was a recent movie with the gaang so it’s possible, if they’ve been watching it. They made the Leviathan Grimm because they’d been watching Godzilla at the time and the dumb Ghira/Fennec (or was it Corsac?) punch scene was taken from HeroAca.

  • This is super cool and I think a nice opportunity to geek out a bit with some relevant knowledge I have:

Warm-bloodedness isn’t as simple to split into on/off as most people might think. Both the hyrax and the naked mole rat – mammals by all accounts – have limited if any ability to regulate their own body temperatures. Meanwhile, traditionally cold-blooded animals like the great white shark or tuna are capable of producing body heat but just don’t regulate their core temperature the same way warm-blooded animals do.

Those larger cold-blooded animals also benefit from being so large that they simply lose less heat because of the square-cube law and are capable of simply retaining body heat for an effective constant elevated temperature. AFAIK that’s where science has thought a lot of dinosaurs have fallen for a LONG while, but I think the traditionally warm-blooded hypotheses has been around for a few decades at this point.

IIRC some hibernating mammals also stop thermoregulating while hibernating, so “warm-bloodedness” isn’t even continuous across individuals.
