1·11 months agoI was only responding to the idea that no one should ever use NodeJS, as it’s good as a web server.
A Honda Civic is a great car for what it’s built for and people know how to drive it. But I wouldn’t use it to haul gravel or drive the Indy 500.

715·11 months agoNode.js is a fantastic tool for web servers. Its event loop allows it to rival much lower-level languages in performance while remaining easy to write and maintain. JavaScript has been the most popular programming language for nearly a decade.

3·11 months agoAgreed. But those that do know COBOL make BANK maintaining the old financial systems!
So people would rather Brave doctored their search results than showed them what they searched for? I genuinely don’t know what else right-wing news outlets would write about vaccines 🤣
Am I misunderstanding something? That’s what I would expect to see from any search engine when you search for “vaccines” and “news from the right”.

Programming@programming.dev•What are the craziest misconceptions you’ve heard about programming from people not familiar with it?
3·2 years agoLike stoly said above, I think programmers are probably slightly above average intelligence overall, so don’t sell yourself short there. But yeah. We’re not geniuses

Programming@programming.dev•What are the craziest misconceptions you’ve heard about programming from people not familiar with it?
6·2 years agoThis is very fair. Math has always come fairly easily to me. So math intuition plays a part in my interest and ability to learn to program.
I think most people, even smart people, assume they couldn’t do it though because I’m some kind of genius, which only a few programmers actually are.

8·2 years agoAbsolutely. I bet it’s just easier and cheaper for them to not bother securing their fob radio.
To be clear, I’m saying they should get their shit together as a company, because it’s clearly not a hard thing to fix.

26·2 years agoI work for a company of under 100 employees in a small city. Our head IT guy bought a Flipper Zero with his own money so he could make sure our building key fobs couldn’t be easily copied.
If this guy can do it, I think the bajillion dollar auto industry can figure out a solution!

What an asshat indeed.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada's Population Just Grew The Most Since Confederation... Where Will Everyone Live?
19·2 years agoThis is a really important point. I’ve already seen this when talking with people. And it’s also really hard to differentiate the “immigration is good in moderation” sentiment from the “immigrants are ruining the country” sentiment.
Because in the proper numbers, immigration keeps our country alive by filling in gaps and growing the economy. But if the numbers are too high, we have more competition for work and housing and all our other economic resources.
I think nowadays the narrative is seems to be “immigration is always good and if you say otherwise you’re a bigot”. But we should certainly make sure we are intentional about how many people we bring in because we want our country to be the best it can be for everyone in it and everyone entering it.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Liberals advance assault-style gun ban with legislation, regulation: LeBlanc
31·2 years agoThere are many solutions proposed by firearms rights activists to problems of violence and crime. If you’re interested, check out gundebate.ca
I’m not sure what handgun data you’re talking about, but it’s common for Canadians to misunderstand the state of firearms in Canada. Since handguns are restricted firearms, they’re registered. This means we know every time one of them turns up at a crime scene and the registered owner is charged. And this simply doesn’t happen. These handguns are not being used in crimes. So banning legal sale of handguns will change nothing regarding crime.
I want to do something about violence in our country too. I just want us to do something that will actually work because those involved are actually educated on the issue.

This is super cool and I’ve always wondered if it was possible. Do you know how you’d do it? And have you started it yet?
