  • Historically unpaid commute originated before urban sprawl, car culture and a massive spike in population, it’s been grandfathered in, but it’s absolutely theft in the current environment, whether the job can be done at home or not. Posit 1 hr commute either way, that’s 10hrs a week, and should probably get hazard loading as well. When unpaid commute originated it was more like 10-15 minutes walk per day.

One of the most significant and efficient policy changes to combat CO2 and other pollutants would be to legislate paid commuting (with just protection against discrimination for both employee and employer). Just watch every employer WFH everyone who can doing the obvious, not to mention improved quality of life, local services and being hugely popular. Expect one hell of a fight.

And Elite Dangerous has had fans wanting walkable ship interiors for a decade or so. NMS ‘here you go and craft your own ship to boot’ ! There’s been rather a lot of cross-pollination between the two, but this round goes to NMS by landslide, assuming it works as advertised, and sight unseen I’ll assume so given past efforts. NMS, the game that keeps giving.

Nah, oz is cooked already, in this case ‘social media ban’ for under 16s, same identity/privacy issues no doubt once they get their shit together but this time you’re giving ID to meta and tiktok instead of pornhub, significantly worse IMO. Germany’s going after adblockers. Shit’s bad out there…

  • You seem to be assuming that the volume is immediately replaced by the external atmosphere, which I doubt is valid, more likely that the volume of the person would decrease, at least temporarily. The weight of 1 Liter (assuming a massive fart) of air is 1.275g according to wolfram, so, using your density numbers above, 1.275 * 1.06/1.2 = 1.126g lighter. Measurable with a really good scale, if the 90ml fart volume is realistic (has to be more realistic I guess), that’s ~.1g,

Think of yourself as a hot air balloon with a very tiny chamber, and when you release a 90 milliliter fart, you lose a little buoyancy and sink a little. You get heavier when you fart.

No, you get denser, but not heavier.

  • I have a similar setup on my laptop, a docker searxng (well podman rootless, but near enough) locked into a gluetun instance. Works fine, simple to set up, sucks less than any individual search engine and is usefully configurable, but I’m on linux, I expect there’s more pain for windows (linux might be a use for the spare computer…). It’s not resource intensive. Gluetun let’s you expose a local port for searxng and you just point your browser at https://192.168.x.x:8192 or whatever, no need to worry about exit IP. Gluetun is well used and has a focus on avoiding leaks, plenty of eyes on the code, I’ve never had any problems.

You can wireguard (or tailscale or whatever) into your home network and use it on your phone too. Spin up a pihole for adblock while you’re at it. I say go for it…
