Or alternatively, why don’t we run with that approach? So many things would benefit from “save to text”. A bit farther afield but why not save to image, save to html, etc.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Who were some of your childhood heroes that turned out to be horrible people?
3·2 hours agoCan I say Dr Oz, sort of? Seriously, many of the women in my Moms generation were huge Oprah fans, and really loved Dr Oz. While his expertise was always questionable, his advice seemed relatively harmless and wholesome. For conservative folk with no interest in following medical science, they watched listened, and learned, including some actual good advice.
Now I just can’t even answer with some of the shit those same relatives bring up

2·3 hours agoI got into each mesh technology for specific devices. Home Assistant supports them all and they seem to coexist just fine in my use case.
I have a small to medium setup with only a few simple automations and a focus on voice control and scheduling
Preference
- Thread - given Apple, Amazon, and Google support and the standardization work, I expect this to be the future. Eventually. But I’m getting impatient. If I’m buying a device, I prefer Thread but usually it’s not yet
- z-Wave - my first, and most devices. Basically this was what was most available at local stores when I started. No complaints
- Zigbee - by far the biggest selection of simple, cheap sensors. I need to more of those
- all too much is WiFi but I try to avoid
But it also helps that my approach is generally switches and outlets. Hard-wired, predictable network, tend to be repeaters. I have comparatively fewer leaf nodes.
This approach also fits in with my biggest challenge. While my house is small, it’s an older one with dense materials that blocks a lot of radio signals. For example I have no cell phone reception inside yet strong signal just out any door. My focus on switches and outlets overcome this with a repeater in every room
So for example a few years back I got a z-wave IR blaster to control a mini-split AC because at the time I mostly used z-wave. I already had a z-wave light switch in the same room, acting as a repeater, so no worries about connectivity. Now I have both z-wave and Zigbee light switches in that room so expect both meshes to be strong for any future devices in that room

No one claimed uniquely impressive. Trump is unique in somehow acquiring a cult-like following that is also fine with him violating what they claim are their principals and their own best interests, and even in the face of denying reality. I’ve never understood it - have they ever listened to him speak? Even before the evilness of his actions, how the heck are they hearing anything positive? Anything they wish to applaud or follow? Yet they do.
I seriously hope Trump is unique. His personality cult has somehow immunized him from limits and consequences, and we really cannot afford another.
Not usually, but it’s unclear where the intersection is. I believe it’s usually 15’ from the intersection. Usually that is before the stop sign and I don’t recall seeing a situation where you could park past the stop sign but I don’t know if there is such a traffic regulation
I wasn’t implying sinister, but utter incompetence. Too long of screws is an “oops” but this is like attaching a cabinet to the “wet wall” and blaming too long screws for the leaking pipe

1·1 day agoI wish. Apple lets me set automatic reader mode which usually helps, but sites like this seem intentionally broken for that.
Pretty much never should have screwed anything into the subfloor, regardless of screws long enough to go through the flooring. That’s entirely wrong. If it were screwed into the joists, or blocking between joists, this could not have happened

The worst part for me is
Should federal resources be allocated to states according to how much they pay in federal taxes or should some states subsidize others?
You just know the donor states, those who could financially benefit are also the ones with the empathy to want to help everyone. Meanwhile some of these welfare queens would vote for such a proposal, despite losing all that money keeping them afloat.
As a resident of one of the top donor states, my only objection is the generational poverty. If there’s a recurring pattern of them not using the money effectively to improve the lives of their citizens, perhaps they need to be placed in receivership. We can bring them out of their poverty despite all their efforts otherwise

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is Home Assistant the recommended default for smart homes?English
101·2 days agoI’ll also vote to reconsider WiFi. Home Assistant supports a variety of local mesh networks that by default can’t connect to the cloud and whose devices are cheaper and lower power.
I use all three of zwave, Zigbee, and thread; ha works with whatever you need.

3·2 days agoI choose to pay for remote access, but it’s for convenience and to support the developers. You are free to configure it yourself in a couple ways (and there is decent documentation) or do without remote access
I don’t know how you set up remote access for OpenHab, but from a quick glance at the web site it looks similar
Cowboy chicken. Recipes are all over online, but I love it, usually presented as a one skillet meal so easy, and very filling!
Cut up chicken, coat in chili powder and smoked paprika, then sear. Dump in corn, beans, veggies and simmer for a bit. That’s it.
I used to love the black bean soup at Panera before they discontinued it and the restaurant started going downhill. But recently I made some from a random online recipe; it’s easy to make and it’s excellent!
I even got a baguette so it’s just like Panera used to be, only better, less sodium, more veggies, and much cheaper
I never made soup before because my family only ever made chicken noodle soup, but it was easier than expected

Yes, I’m a big fan of his so far
