Aka Canola.
There’s a town here in Canada that used to call themselves “The Land of Rape and Honey” but changed their slogan… for reasons. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/aug/22/canadian-town-tisdale-land-of-rape-and-honey-slogan
Canola is slight different from rapeseed, and was created at the University of Manitoba. The name ‘canola’ is a portmanteau of Canada and the initialism of ‘Oil Low Acid’.
TIL.
Is there very much rapeseed farmed today that is not canola?
Just read it on Wikipedia:
All rapeseed farmed today is 0- or 00-rapeseed (free from erucic acid). But not all is canola. Canola is a summer rape. After that breakthrough they created a 0-winter-rape in Gießen and Göttingen (Germany) called “Lesira”.
Other brand names are ‘Liglandor’, ‘Lindora’, ‘Liropa’ and ‘Elena’.
