Ironic in a way that productive forces are so developed in China that the communists have become free marketeers while the capitalists are back to doing hardcore 18th century protectionist mercantilism.
China really learned from the mistakes of the Soviet Union. They let the capitalists in and the capitalists gleefully destroyed their own productive capacity for a quick profit. This is what long term planning uninterrupted by the endless moving of deck chairs on the Titanic (American elections) gets you.
Agreed but to be fair, I think the Soviets would have done this if they could have, but they were facing an imminent invasion from the Nazis and had to batten down the hatches. China’s borders seem more secure to me compared with the USSR, which had lengthy borders with imperialist countries.
Well yes but after Stalin there was a possibility for them to do the exact same thing as China, if we’re being a bit idealistic. I think that reform and opening up was due to the Chinese learning from Kruschev’s faults

Very good point

TBH, for China it was possible, because Americans wanted to encourage further split from USSR, so the Soviet Union didn’t actually have such option.
Interesting, I never thought of this
True.
That is a very good metaphor! Thank you.
