For me, if I ever hear “card-based” or “soulslike” I have absolutely no desire to play a game, no matter how many people reccomend it.
I’m also not a huge fan of modern “roguelikes” but I’ve sunk days into nethack and games like that.

why does everyone hate deck builders wtf
did magic the gathering permanently damage my game taste?
Over here playing nothing but deck-builders, rogue-likes, and souls-likes
“Surely this one will match Slay The Spire” he says as he spends $15 on yet another ugly, easy, knockoff
(Cobalt Core is super rad though)
if I’m playing a city builder I don’t want my city building options to be “whatever’s in your deck of cards”
if I’m playing an RPG I don’t want my skills and equipment or whatever to be “a bunch of cards”
if I wanted to play a card game… I’d play a card game
You’re talking about card games though, like those are just card games with novel mechanics
“Do homework first before you play” is not fun
If it’s well designed you shouldn’t have to do any homework, the game should be naturally teaching you the basics as you progress through play and 90% of the fun should be finding interactions through cards yourself without looking them up. I don’t know what you’re playing but it sounds miserable
Having to construct a deck is homework, fuck deck-building
deck builders are cool because you don’t build them beforehand though, you pick up cards as part of gameplay so instead of having to build a deck and do math and look up metas and shit you just click the cards that look cool during the game
Why would I waste time building a deck when there are people to shoot in the face with plasma guns
Hey that’s just as valid as enjoying deck building
Deck building games are when you make a deck through gameplay and not beforehand tho
I dislike how nowadays slay the spire and its ilk is what people assume for the term deck builder instead of multiplayer (usually offline) games like ascension or puzzle strike or dominion
:( all I think about is those games you just mentioned and the new Balatro game that just came out, why are we calling games not about cards deck builders
For me it’s too much RNG I don’t feel like I’m in control of what I’m doing. I do not trust in the heart of the cards.
That’s why I love deck builders though, it’s all about exerting your will indirectly by modifying odds
