Hi all !

Sorry if i posted it in the wrong Lemmy community.

Short summary

i suggest rewamping the current vote system for voting tags or hashtag to improve our search result and timeline organisation. It can also connect us to the fediverse.

Some quick idea :

  • Once a tag/hashtag reach a vote threehold, it is either removed or added. The threehold are based on community size/activities…
  • a tag can be turned into an hashtag once a vote threehold is reached.
  • some added tag can trigger a report : spam, bot…it will solve an issue i got, i don’t know if it has already reported. Lemmy world use automod for that.

The goal

I want to improve post revalance, the way we can search information on a topic and structure our timeline.

Some existing ideas

So I thought about a solution similar to github. Github works as link agregator. There is also zulip chat. It uses the tag system to strictly enforce a topic in discussion thus improving workflow.

When we post an issue, we can tell devs and users if it is a bug, an enhancement…and there is a search bar for that. Thank to its tag system, it helps us a lot for searching revalent topic. With hashtag, we can be connected to the fediverse and improve interaction with mastodon.

Tags/hashtags have already discussed in github and i want to go futher with it.

the problem with the voting system

  • It’s based on the majority’s opinion, it has their pros and cons. It can create a social norm which may undermine small community as deaf people, transgender people…
  • It doesn’t tell why you upvoted/downvoted it.
  • most of the fediverse will never see your vote. So you won’t reach them.

Collaborative tag/hashtag

Hashtags/tags could be collaborative and voted with some limitation (as mediawiki text editing). So we can tell post’s revalance.

Why not having an array of checkbox/tags/hashtags and share to users your opinion behind a vote ? Only trusted users can add them.

Then thrusted users can vote for the most revalent tag. Once it reach a threehold, eg 100 upvotes, they are validated, turned into an hashtag and shared in the fediverse. other tags below 50 votes will be removed after 1 month.

We can also add these tags when we create a post. Those one can only be removed if it reach a downvote threehold.

We could turn them into hashtag once a vote threehold is reached.

I suggest the vote threehold is scalled to community size, daily activities. Dunno how we can manage that, but a calculation to avoid smaller instance being hidden by bigger one.

What do you think ? Sorry if my point wasn’t clear.

I think this was always an intended feature (I’ve certainly been hearing about it for years as something people want/devs want to add), in addition to a user tagging system (i.e. users adding tags to their own usernames (e.g. pronoun tags). the main difference, though, was that it was something the poster or mods/admins could add and not something for the userbase at large to vote on. I think making it a voting system allows abuse. like consider a large group of transphobes adding tags to posts in trans comms, for instance.

a trusted user system is it’s own can of worms.

So it won’t work with a trusted user system ? I thought blocking new account for adding tag/vote would solve this issue and provide a good security barriere. :(

Someone suggested slashdot system. I never tried it. Is it good ? Any feedback ?

Anyway, i think the hashtag feature is really needed as it will improve our interraction with fediverse community. Along moderation’s tool and i hope more people can help with the software development to unleash its potential and reach a good maturity. I saw a very promising group that want to learn Rust and give a hand later.

Here i’m feeling stuck to lemmy’s communities, it’s great but i’m still feeling a wall with our interactions. So i often cross-post from mastodon with hashtags.
