Today, the URL of your standalone blog page in Catodon is using this structure: https://catodon.rocks/@catodon/blog , so /@user/blog. Would this be a reason for you to not host your blog on a Catodon server? Is a domain.com/customblogname URL better? Would this be good enough, or is a URL structured like customblogname.domain.com a prerequisite for your blog?

In general, which are, for you, the things that the platform that hosts your blog must absolutely have, and which are your nice-to-haves? Any features that you haven’t seen in any software, but you think are a good idea for a blogging platform?

Thanks!

I was going to say subdomains are sorta an expectation to feel like a real blog but then I realized I have a writefreely blog at https://scream.today/daily/ and never even noticed it wasn’t a subdomain till now so maybe it doesn’t matter. though I do have a fondness for subdomains and they do feel more blog like…

Yeah, I’d love to do subdomains but it gets complicated (there might already be other subdomains used for things outside catodon, or might be needed in the future etc). I think I’m leaning to something like domain.com/b/blogname, it seems to be the shortest safe path, that can be dedicated to this without implications. I’ll also look into how to make bring-your-own-domain a smooth experience.

      • @panos@catodon.rocks subdomains are doable, but you need to set up your server accordingly to do so, like setting up a wildcard subdomain for all the possible subdomains you will need (as well as getting the equivalent certificate).

as for the “bring-your-own-domain” situation, if you want to implement it on catodon, you will probably need a form where the user will insert their domain and getting the response that they need to set up specific DNS records on their registrar’s panel in order to point to the catodon server.

it sounds messy because it is. there’s a reason for the dns jokes.
