Artist: John Sharman

Year: ca. 1918

Medium: Oil on canvas

This composition is an intricate network of trellis, railing, and awning. Upon this framework Sharman lavished broad strokes of brilliant color, applied with the sensitivity to light and shade that he acquired from the Impressionist practice of painting outdoors. This technique created a portrait of summer sun that casts deep shadows on the porch and transforms vines into a wave of white blossoms. Although not well known today, Sharman received many excellent reviews in his day, especially in his native Boston. A critic for the Boston Transcript described At the End of the Porch as “a beautiful, luminous and joyous picture of a place where one would like to be.”

Lol that woman just waiting for her kudzu vines to overtake her trellis. No consideration to the environment or her kids that will have to maintain the invasive species, spoiler they won’t

At first glance I was jealous. Beautiful picture! But just look at her leisurely doing some knitting (or whatever art she is doing).
Then I looked at 1918… There was only theaters and books, and the bigger portion of the population probably couldn’t actually read/enjoy.

I would have a lot of craft time without tvs, movies, books or even radio.

look at the house (and her skin color, if you care for it). In 1918, she was probably born lucky. Very lucky!

All those are just difficulty settings to this game even now :)

She probably was educated also - to the point that was appropriate to young ladies.

        It is a wonderful picture.
