Who remembers these nightmares:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaz_drive
And the “click of death”, I had to have backups to my backup when they started using them at work…
yikes. my dad had a zip drive and it was annoying as hell
I think I had to replace a half dozen of these. They kept sending me replacements, and they kept dying.
I had a Zip drive, but same thing.
I had SparQ drive. Same thing plus a little extra thrown in for fun
The SparQ had a serious failure mode which damaged SparQ disks in such a way that they would damage subsequent SparQ drives in which they were placed. Inserting a broken disk in a SparQ drive will cause the drive to break any new disks placed in that drive. These broken disks could break additional drives, breaking most of the drives in an office in short order.
Went over great with my friend group who all picked them up to share large files in the dialup days…
Spendy ($1,781 in 2025 USD), and it flopped: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_Jazz
probably more optimized than modern microslop office
Interesting read
Bright yellow “J” on white background was certainly a choice…
Awful fonts, color schemes, and clashing backgrounds was the 90s aesthetic in a nut shell.
You know you make me wanna shout!
They got the vibe down early on with computers, huh.
to be fair, modern software is far more prone to make you want to shout because of how unoptimized and undercooked it is sometimes.
I dunno man. It’s been pretty rough the whole time, just different trade-offs. 😅
