Artist Michele Yates was the first person to drop off her artwork at Douglas Flanders & Associates Gallery on Thursday.

Her bright yellow, mixed-media painting won’t be among the 343 works at the Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts exhibition, starting next week. It was one of almost 3,000 submissions rejected by the Minnesota State Fair Fine Art exhibition. But there were no hard feelings.

“Just do what you do, and sometimes that’s gonna work out and sometimes it won’t,” said Yates, of Blaine, whose work will be featured, instead, in the gallery’s third annual “Reject Show,” beginning Aug. 29. “That’s the great thing about art: There’s something for everyone.”
