This is why I get up, scoop them into my arms regardless of protest, and plop them onto my lap
The only English word my oldest cat knows is “NNNNNOOOOOOoooooo” when I pick him up.

He looks grumpy but he’s very happy in this photo. He just got this tree and while he was scratching it I shoved his butt into the pouch and he did the whole “GET THAT THING OUTTA MY FACE” bird memeHis ear tips are missing because he was a stray for 2 years before I got him. He’s also got gigantic paws that are constantly kneading including mid-air if I hold him like a baby.

He’s semi-feral and likes to have all 4 paws on the ground in case he needs to bolt (kitty PTSD), which means no cuddles :( but I can pick him up and plant him on my lap and bear hug him and he tolerates that (he tolerates it so much he kneads and purrs the entire time)
He’s still an outdoor cat trapped indoors but I let him out under supervision to mow the lawn (and sometimes puke it up later…) but I don’t want him outside on his own.
Aawww <3 I get it, kitty! I’ve got PTSD, too, and am also always making sure I have possible escape routes, haha. It sounds like you’re taking great care of him! He’s seriously lucky to have someone caring and understanding like you, and I’m very happy for you both that you have eachother! And I love that he accepts and loves your snuggles and that he kneads and purrs about it with those big ol’ mitts!! That’s so cuuuute!!

My husky can be like this. Sometimes I will have just taken her out for a walk, her food and water is full, I am not eating anything but she keeps trying to get my attention yet when I reach out to pet her, she pulls away and stays just out of reach. Maybe she just wants me to stare at her? 🤷♂️
