TL;DR: The primary hurdle is that the original specialized components, such as magnetic heads and optical pickups, are no longer in production. Beyond parts, the precise manufacturing knowledge and specialized factory tuning procedures were largely lost as production lines were retired.
I grew up with Walkmans. There’s a reason why everyone switched to MP3 Player at some point.
So did I, and the reason everyone switched was a mix of convenience and novelty. As I’ve grown older, I’ve realized convenience is not always good, and is often taken to such extremes that were becoming a civilization of people who can’t bother to do anything the slightest bit inconvenient in their free time. Essentially, switching to MP3s, and especially to streaming, was a bad thing.
I got into vinyl specifically to bring some inconvenience back into my life, and I’ve never enjoyed music so much in my life; instead of it being this thing that happens nearly automatically without me having to think about it, I need to actively choose to listen to music, and physically pick out the songs to listen to. Instead of music fading into the background as I put literally no thought into it, I’m forming memories around my music which lifts the experience to much more enjoyable heights.
It’s not for everyone, but I’d highly recommend trying to add some inconvenience back into your life, and going back to the walkman days would be a good way to do it; my wife recently got into CDs again after grabbing some audiobooks from the library, and there are some good portable player options out there for pretty cheap, even if Sony themselves won’t be getting back into the market any time soon.
Who tf wants casettes back? They were terrible.
