Friends, Lemmings, Piefeeders, lend me your ears. I come to bury @PugJesus@piefed.social not to praise him… Well, no, I DO come to praise him and I’m not burying him, I’m just wishing him goodbye and good luck on whatever he spends his (newly copious amounts of free) time on next. I always liked history since I was a kid. It was really awesome seeing this… this… FLOOD of posts about history here every day without fail, realizing that history was important to other people and that it could be fun and enlightening and half the time I wouldn’t know wtf a post was about and I’d end up spending half an hour on wikipedia reading up on it and I’d post a link in comments and it’d feel like I was taking part in things. Anyway I’d disagree with PugJ once in a while about various things, but PugJ always struck me as sincere and passionate regarding things they cared about, which is admirable.

PugJesus, it’s too bad that you’re cutting away from the threadiverse. Your posts greatly improved life here over the past couple years. I hope you will consider staying around in some capacity, perhaps even under a different name. But if not, that’s cool, I can understand that sometimes things are too much and you just have to step away.

My friend! May the spirit of a hundred Romans travel with you!

Et tu, Piefed? Then fall, PugJesus!

I’m just wishing him goodbye and good luck on whatever he spends his (newly copious amounts of free) time on next.

Heh, not as much new free time as you might think! One of the things I enjoyed about posting on here was that I could do it in little pockets of waiting while doing other tasks. But some hours freed up weekly, certainly. Sadly, I’ll probably fill it with games instead of anything useful, since all my other hobbies I’m pretty much full-up on. But there are worse fates! :p

    Still would prefer history shitposting

Stop, you’ll make me tear up.

One of the things I always hoped for when posting or writing an explanation was giving more than a chuckle (though I loved giving a chuckle) but connecting with and supporting the history enthusiasm of others.

In retrospect, I do wish I was less acrid at times. Not always. But some times.

If I come back, likely as not, it would be under the same name. My reputation is one thing I don’t fear - not least because I’ve earned it, for better and worse! A new name would eventually acquire just the same reputation from my cantankerous soul. :p

What if I donated an instance to you? Set everything up and gave you the keys basically? Maybe I could do basic maintenance too if you wanted

I appreciate the offer, but that just shifts the burden of long-term instance stability onto me (and you). A big part of instance stability is financial and admin health, so I would prefer to move to an established and somewhat successful extant instance.

The core issue isn’t that I don’t have anywhere I could move to, it’s that I don’t have the will left to move all my comms and build them back up again. Uncertainty over the longevity of any instance I move to is also a concern, but only a part of it. The main problem is that I’ve done this too many times and I don’t have it in me to do it again.

Gonna miss ya, PJ. May whatever break you take, however long it lasts, bring you the rest you need.

Your posts and presence will, perhaps fittingly, live on in the annals of fediverse history 🫡

I can respect not wanting to move instances again. Kinda reminds me of moving between social media back in the aughts. Friendster, Orkut, MySpace… Facebook wtf is this shit, I’m not doing it!

Still, no need to call it quits altogether. Just ignore the boulder-rolling aspects and give random history threads some PugJesus every now and then!

The big reason from my understanding is that piefed wanted less engagement and limits upvoting. If by my understanding the fediverse is instance based and federated into the feeds. Why hasn’t pugjesus spun up pugjesus@historymemes.world? Not to say pugjesus should or wants to spend his time, in addition to posting, maintaining a fediverse instance.

That last sentence. Maintaining an instance is a whole additional work load. Not only caring for the technical side of things, but also the additional side of moderation of a whole instance instead of only a community.

I do wish I was less acrid at times. Not always. But some times.

Nahhh. It’s better for everyone involved if rightful annoyance comes through. The cult of civility is a gift to trolls - their steepest hurdle is being treated seriously, even when they’re just full of shit.

I hope you wander back into a less silly instance, on your own time. Gotta have somewhere to whinge about your other hobbies.

Well, like I said. Not always. Certainly I have no regrets of delivering biting remarks to genuine dipshits and bootlickers.

But I’m also acutely aware that my acidic tone activated on folks who may have been a bit on the stubborn side, but probably did not always deserve that level of response.

Even if you don’t run comms anymore we’d love to hear about cool history stuff you come across!

Your posts always got me interested in something new as someone who is starting to connect with history for kinda the first time in my life

I hope life treats you well, and should we see you in the future, I can’t wait to see what I might learn about ☺️

I’ve never really been interested in history. Your posts made me realise that was due to the crappy education system I grew up with rather than the topic itself. You should leave knowing you made a positive impact on some people :)

I remember this exact joke from Brother Bear and I think several tv shows. It’s a trope where the person intentionally antagonizes their friend and it got memes pretty hard awhile back.

I made a note of their instance admins’ fuckery being the last straw. A good enough reason to not rely on piefed.social in my book.

Unfortunately, the issue is that, well, no one is getting paid to run instances.

They are run by individuals or small groups who happen to have an unusually large amount of free time, and often an axe to grind. But it turns out, standing up instances, troubleshooting, dealing with drama and assholes - it is kind of a lot of work. Maybe not alot-alot - but once your instance is big enough, still a lot. And so any given instance owner will ask themselves, after spending 30 minutes deleting cp and racist comments - why am I doing this? And they have a reason… but eventually, that reason doesnt live up to the annoyance, and they call it quits.

If, on the other hand, there was money to be made by doing this work, they would be far more likely to put the effort in, and to putting the effort into finding a replacement when they felt like calling it quits.

There are only two reasons I open Lemmy every day: PugJesus’ history memes and Ickplant’s cute animals pics.

It pains me to say so, but the Fediverse never took off and I fail to see a reason to stay engaged. Without you, this place will look a lot more empty.

Thank you for all the wonderful years of history-posting, Pug.
