it is top tier adult animation. we kinda can relate because when you’re living near Chornobyl with fucking monkeys throwing drones into the confinement shell for shits and giggles it’s just the thing you have to learn to live with. grim as fuck otherwise.
The GN it’s based on is actually pretty mild, IMO.
The whole point seems to be that the terrible nuclear fallout is treated as relatively mild & manageable, due to the characters’ typical English reserve… even to the bitter end. That’s the huge, honking Irony as I see it. So yeah, it’s nowhere near as bleak and soul-smacking as Barefoot Gen, and stuff like that.
Barefoot Gen based on first-hand experiences so can’t really compare.
I mean… I wasn’t trying to compare them from a real / hypothetical POV.
ok. anyway - radiation is scary as fuck and it is very easy to slip into ghastly cringe and both When The Wind Blows and Barefoot Gen manage to get it right.
I sure hope this is a nice and cute movie!
…aaand they’re putting themselves in their own body bags…
now imagine this being a Mike Leigh or Ken Loach movie with actors sinking into the thing. now that’s gonna be pitch black grim
