How sad is it that supporting the most basic tencents of free speech is a win?

Ted Cruz is a piece of shit.

But, one thing he has remained consistent about is defense of free speech. Usually defending the freedom of right wingnuts to say what they want, but he did defend Kimmel and criticize Kimmel’s removal.

That said, Ted Cruz is still a piece of shit.

But, one thing he has remained consistent about is defense of free speech.

This is giving him too much credit considering he voted for Carr to lead the FCC in the first place. The one thing Cruz has remained consistent on is knowing how to improve his own reputation by saying something reasonable sounding every so often, but in terms of his actions he’s a party apparatchik and total piece of shit.

These people have proven to be traitors and pedophiles. There is no redemption for them, just prison. We will NEVER look back on them as benign Republicans.

Romney wasn’t even that anyway. He became a Sociopathic Oligarch with a weird religious obsession by buying companies and stripping them of their assets. He stole his fortune by destroying carefully built lifelong careers, and forcibly unemploying thousands, perhaps millions of people. He’s a monster, with money to pay for nice clothes, a good haircut, and a first-rate political smile, but he’s still a monster.

The only reason that people look back on people like Romney and Bush with fondness is because the compare favorably to the absolute shitshow that occupies the government right now. That doesn’t change the fact that they were still jackals, the very ones that led to where we are now. They may not like what’s happening now, but I guarantee, they are still cashing in. Especially Romney.

When he dies, that religion that he claims to believe in so much, is going to punish him harshly. I wish I believed in that nonsense so I could enjoy it.

Ted cruz is a rare politician who is in politics because he fights for his convictions and wants to advocate for them

Now his convictions are dogshit, and he does nothing but harm, but it does mean he’s a breath of fresh air compared to his compatriots

Disagree. He became one of Trump’s biggest defenders; even defending the capital attack, and spreading The Big Lie. Before Trump got elected the first time, Trump basically called Cruz’s wife ugly, and Cruz basically told voters not to vote for Trump because he is immoral. Cruz is likely just trying to position himself for a 2028 presidential run, or being bribed by ABC or whatever.

Behold, Schrödinger’s shit sandwich. Now, a shit sandwich is when you take something shitty, and bracket it with two nice things. If you’ve heard of this before, you’ve probably talked to management, or more clearly, heard someone vent about talking to management. If you haven’t, well, good on you for avoiding the notice of management.

Now, what could a Schrödinger’s shit sandwich be? Well, it would have to be something that somehow both follows and rebels against that definition above. So let’s take the quote.

Ted Cruz is a piece of shit.

Ted Cruz defends free speech from government overreach.

Ted Cruz is a piece of shit.

So this could be represented as:

We’re making fun of Ted Cruz.

      We’re agreeing with Ted Cruz!

We’re making fun of Ted Cruz some more.

Yep, that looks like a classic shit sandwich, alright. But! Could it not also be:

      You’re thinking of Ted Cruz.

Someone is defending free speech from government overreach.

Ugh! And now there’s more Ted Cruz.

Well, fuck me if that isn’t a reverse shit sandwich! So which is it. A shit sandwich? A reverse shit sandwich? Both at the same time‽ Schrödinger’s Shit Sandwich!

But you can only be sure which one it is by taking that bite.

We’re at a point where America’s great public protectors of free speech and baseline decency are:

    1. The “Veejay” of a clip show of shortened airline-food standup sets.
    2. One half of the duo who brought the world “Girls Jumping on Trampolines.”
    3. Zazu from the bad version of the Lion King.

They’re doing good work, but christ on a cracker they shouldn’t have been tasked with this job.

I got that the latter two were Jimmy Kimmel and John Oliver. You lost me on this one.

Edit: Also, don’t forget 4. The man so good at satire that he simultaneously convinced stupid right wingers he represented them and only slightly less stupid left wingers that satirizing the right meant that he actually represented them until he got a new non-satire show and turns out he’s just a left leaning centrist with an expert level knowledge of The Lord Of The Rings lore, but still calls a fascist a fascist.

Number 1 is Jon Stewart, though to be fair I had kinda thought he was on the 80s game show “Remote Control” on MTV and had to pivot when I learned he was not. :-)

I get your point but I do think it’s a little reductive to gloss over the fact that Oliver and Stewart have done an actually-good job of covering news all these years.

I was sort of intentionally being reductive to make the point that it’s pretty fucked up that our bravest and most trustworthy media figures all come out of comedy, some of it pretty low-brow.

There’s some decent voices in the American mainstream media, but most of them are so terrified of getting canceled by the so-called free-speech absolutists that the satirists (if one can even call Kimmel that) are having to do real work in spreading information and speaking truth to power.

I get what you were saying, I just think we can also recognize comedians can do good work while making jokes at the same time. They always have done this. The good ones, anyhow.

Trump has not been doing governments job since day one, but if he’d pull his head out of trumps ass far enough he’d see that
