Manitoba will ban youth from using social media and AI chatbots, Premier Wab Kinew announced on Saturday.
The proposed law protecting youth from the harmful effects of social media will be the first of its kind in Canada.
Age verification can (currently) be easily faked. If they go the route of ID verification, meaning more data collection, it’s a huge privacy nightmare.
Why not tackle the root design problems of these platforms which makes them so toxic?
Let’s focus less on age verification and more on design patterns that make these platforms so addictive:
- No algorithmic feeds / recommendations (back to the old chronological feed)
- No infinite scroll (by paginating a feed, it creates a small friction point that gives the user pause as to whether they want to continue or not)
- No instant re-posting (so many people blindly repost shit they haven’t even read, amplifying bullshit that hardly anyone actually knows they’re amplifying further. Want to re-share? Go old school, post the link yourself.)
You already make more sense than the big heads in the government.
I don’t think it’s the solution.
Everyone on lemmy loves wab kinew. Everyone on lemmy also hates age verification. Who will win? Only time will tell
What an idiot. It won’t happen or work but sure lets waste money trying.
