I expect this will end up being a massive miscalculation for the US much the same way Ukraine was. It seems that they simply assumed that toppling Iran would be easy, they didn’t expect Iran to show unity, and to hit back hard. If their assumptions proved correct, then it would’ve allowed them to cut off China from a major energy supplier, and to establish a firm presence in West Asia which would be uncontested. After failing to topple Russia, this is the next best move for containing China because they need a staging area for their operations. Now the whole thing is backfiring, and there’s a real chance that the US will be pushed out of the region altogether.
